No future as a therapist

Pros

Flexibility with your available schedule benefits are good, although every couple of months they clawback multiple benefits, it's a trend good yearly PD stipend

Cons

I've been here for two years and for a while I was really invested in it. Things were good. We had flexibility and control over our caseloads. Then, one day a whole bunch of clinicians were laid off with no advance notice to anyone. Therapy managers were laid off and we were all rudderless along with the dozens of clients of those clinicians. No one know anything except C-level leadership. Therapy leadership said they thought hard about how to do the reduction in force and weighed all options and decided just immediately cutting ties with clinicians was "industry standard". That's a terrible standard. Just because something is a standard does not make it a good choice. After the layoffs my caseload became ridiculous, with making people wait weeks upon weeks for a follow-up appointment. It became a therapy mill. When you talk to your manager about turning down or turning off intakes they say "sorry, leadership says no" and we need to do a better job of always ensuring that members have multiple follow-up appointments scheduled so the algorithm sees there are fewer openings. It's all nonsense. Finally, they listened to clinicians who are actually providing the service and saying it's too much. It's a shame it took months of complaining. The damage has already been done. They also routinely say how important each and every one of us is. It's like a broken record. You all have a funny way of showing it by not listening to us and terminating us without any notice. (And I wasn't even one who was terminated.) Leadership also sent out a recent message acknowledging how we're struggling and saying that they didn't anticipate how many clinicians would voluntarily leave after the layoffs. It's incredible that they would not anticipate a large number of ethical clinicians leaving the company of their own accord after members were abandoned suddenly. They say that they reached out to every member and offered them an appointment with a new clinician within ten days. That's a pretty terrible leg to stand on. I was seeing members (that I didn't have room for) weeks and weeks after the layoffs. There's also no career opportunities here. If you're a clinician that's kind of it. There were 40 people who applied to a be a manager. 1 got it. Then two managers were laid off. There's no path forward. Also, they recently made a partnership with Meta. So much for aligning with organizations that value mental health. Values are hollow and go right out the window. If you're a clinician you deserve better. Go join a private practice or a community agency near you.

Not a mission-driven company

Pros

Headspace was built on the backs of two beautiful companies that cared greatly about both their employees and the people they served (legacy Headspace and legacy Ginger pre-merger. The non-upper management employees of Headspace/Ginger are the best humans you can find. If you join here, you will be blessed to be surrounded by amazing heart-centered humans.

Cons

Headspace now is a corporation without heart, without integrity, and is not mission-based. The non-upper management employees still have loads of heart and are doing everything they can for a mission they believe in, but please know that the board and upper-level management only care about money and going public, not about members or non-upper level leadership. If you come to work here... This is what you can expect: You will have zero work-life balance and be bled dry and asked/told to give more and more as fewer and fewer employees remain. You will start out giving willingly for the mission, but soon you will see that members mean nothing to this company. They are only dollar signs. They definitely do not care about you. All empty rhetoric. Layoff after layoff after layoff and false claims each time of this being the last one because "we cut so deep this time". A CEO who is possibly AI and certainly only communicates from an AI-written script. I wish I had left long ago instead of an ignorant hope that the days of leadership caring about the mission and the employees would return. This company being a mental health and mindfulness company is a joke. The rhetoric about workplace wellness, mindfulness at work, and mental health being important for companies to pay attention to is all for sales-purposes and not how Headspace runs its own business. And be careful... Do not bring your full self to work. Know that if you are BIPOC, you are being hired to be tokenized. Do not share about the issues and challenges you see, as you will certainly be part of the next lay-off.

Looks good from the outside, but deeply disappointing culture underneath

Pros

The brand mission and wellness product have real potential. Some individual teammates are kind and talented.

Cons

Leadership and culture don’t reflect the inclusive, supportive values the company promotes publicly. Within the marketing organization, decisions often favored a narrow group of employees and failed to represent true diversity. The recent layoffs eliminated much of the team’s racial and cultural diversity, leaving many employees feeling marginalized and unseen. Long hours are expected without recognition or growth opportunities, and the overall environment feels political and unsupportive.
