Good and bad

Pros

You get to travel around the city meeting new people (both clients/teams), pay is better than normal full-times because you're a semi-consultant, although it can't compare to an actual consultant salary.

Cons

Managers tend to throw you in the fire no matter what technology you're interested in, and they oversell you to the client when you have no knowledge or prior experience of a certain technology stack by asking you to complete an online certification course in 1-2 weeks. Certifications are really not that difficult, but it becomes a problem when clients expect expert knowledge from you when all you have is what you learned during the couple of weeks. You also don't have much of a choice what project you get assigned to, and team/client you're working with can be a hit and miss.

Appalling management

Pros

Good people at the working level - although rapidly declining.

Cons

Company is in profit but not enough profit. Senior management attempting to fix this by flogging a dead horse and continually harassing staff to be more utilised when they can influence utilisation very little. Changed bonus plan mid year to disincentivize working on pre-sales or anything other than billing - Practice development is now worthless so expect less internal development, knowledge sharing and worsening opportunities. Senior management often send out unprofessional emails or make comments about politics as if it's someone ranting on facebook. All the best talent are leaving and getting significant pay increases on exit. Very few exciting opportunities or bleeding edge work - most people are working outside of the areas they want to work in tending to a single client that nobody wants to work with. Pay discrepancies are huge - If you state a low salary expectation on entry expect to be getting paid significantly less than some of your peers, it breeds a toxic atmosphere and has been promised to be fixed for years without avail. Salary increases are pitiful and below inflation many years in the running - despite even getting promotions many people were left with real terms salary decreases. Frequently you'll get the title with a token 1-2% salary increase. Senior management failed to make timely decisions in restructuring the business when a market ceased being productive, then didn't make a significant enough change so had to go again - in turn wiping out profits and bonuses. Practice leads in effect have little control over any working conditions, don't expect any of your concerns, issues or requests to be successful.

Pros

1. Contractually based from home which means all expenses to client sites and Hitachi offices are covered. 2. Competent team members who are generally helpful. 3. Pay is decent but only if you negotiate and insist on what you want.

Cons

1. Purely a technical consultancy based on Microsoft, but no wider offering around advisory, change transformation or strategy. 2. Make a mistake and the bosses/directors will never forget it. Blame is easily assigned. 3. Directors and sales teamo ver-promising the client and under-resourcing a project to protect the margin. Inevitably, the team ends up absorbing the impact. Found myself working late nights for months to meet a sudden next morning deadline that was sprung upon us hours ago. 4. A very Japanese/North American work ethic (few resources, high expectations and burn out). 5. Leavers get little or no mention or farewell from bosses on exit - despite several years of service.
