Pros

The staff in general is wonderful (upper managent excluded). Very passionate, kind co-workers working together to help animals. Overall, the organization is very effective and powerful in improving animal's lives. I am proud of the work I do.

Cons

Very low pay for majority of employees (except for executives/senior staff who have outrageous salaries), also below average benefits, especially for a non-profit. There is a storng culture of cronyism - Wayne Pacelle's friends have all the senior positions and make the big salaries. Advancement opportunities are few and far between for most employees. High turnover.

Pros

Their mission, animal protection is wonderful and they are skilled animal advocates. I support the mission 100%. Benefits are good, salaries better than average for the field. Offices, equipment and expense accounts not a problem. Some cool travel opportunities.Expect some good training opportunities. Work with some very smart and skilled collegues. Meet lots of interesting people.

Cons

Management expects salaried employees to be available 24/7. In my experience, not unusual to get emails and telephone calls from supervisor at odd hours of the night, and on weekends and holidays. Communications from supervisor were strident and harsh. My supervisor, a VP, from very early on had a pronounced disrespectful attitude towards me, something I've never encountered before as a professional with an advanced degree. Very little recognition for work well done. Constant scrutiny and mistrust of abilities, lots of micromanagment from afar. Managment in general-this comes from the top-is very mistrustfiul of employees, steps on inter-staff communications, and insists on lots of formal heirarchical structure and compartmentalization. People are afraid to talk to each other without specific approval from supervisors, so information does not get shared easily. Staff does does not trust management and vice-versa, all in all, making for a very unappealing work environment.
