Pros

The office is located in an A-Class building. The decor is impeccable. Good benefits.

Cons

Management overall is horrible. If you are unhappy with your job or things are working out, management invites you to leave. They could care less whether you stay or go. The Irvine location is a revolving door as far as attorneys are concerned. HIGH turnover. If you don't fit the Jones Day mold, it is a brutal environment to be involved in. There are lots of promises, but no delivery. The company is so large that getting through the red tape to accomplish anything is impossible. They have no retention policy and the turn-over doesn't bother them. The majority of the support staff in the form of secretaries have been there so long that as a result they are extraordinarily complacent. There is favoritism among the management to who they like or don't like on all levels.

Pros

The individual people tend to be pretty nice as people; few yellers. If you know someone, you could get some decent work. If you're willing to put your pesonal life on hold for below-market pay, you'll be happy here.

Cons

Not enough work; low quality work that paralegals should be doing but is forced on associates to jack up billings; complete lack of transparency not just on salaries but on general firm policies; bad review system without substantive critique where employees are pressured not to request reviews; partners have little to no interest in associate development; lack of mentorship; associates blamed for partners' lack of interest in mentoring (yeah, it's a two way street, so don't blame associates for 100% of the problem); firm has little to no interest in associate developement; few to no skill building experiences; very political (it's about who you know and who likes you); absurd level of kool-aid drinking attitude expected of you; expectation that you will 100% of the time drop your personal life on weekend's at a moment's notice. Firm's public stance on diversity and quality of life don't match up with inehrent realities. Granted, some of these problems are pretty common at any big law firm--Jones Day's environment at my office is just pretty depressing. It's a revolving door of associates; don't plant to be here for more than a pit stop on your way to a different job. Little to no feeling of job security, but they still expect you to devote your professional and personal life to the firm even as they plan to kick you to the curb...

Pros

Helpful administrative staff, some interesting co-workers.

Cons

I felt lied to - I was recruited being told that I could spend my summer working in a specific practice and turned down other (much higher ranked) law firms for that opportunity. When the summer started, I was basically told that while I could take a project or two in the practice area that I wanted to work in that if I wanted to receive an offer that I would need to focus on other areas. I felt that the main partners were rude and dismissive (both of my concerns and in general), felt the culture was not friendly or welcoming, and I was very happy to secure post-graduate employment outside of the firm.
