Pros

Wonderfully kind culture, uncommonly technically and scientifically competent team members all the way up to upper management, and open-mindedness. There is real room to grow here and literally everyone will help you do just that.

Cons

The hourly pay model has pros and cons. The single (large) PTO bank and no official company holidays is an interesting model which you can make work for you, just something to be aware of as a potential downside.

Pros

• Smart and talented colleagues who are passionate about open-source software. • Flexible work hours and remote options available. • Interesting projects in visualization and data processing when you get the right ones.

Cons

Kitware has a lot of potential, but it’s held back by weak program management and a lack of clear strategic vision. Transitions between projects are a nightmare with poor handoffs and execution make everything feel chaotic and inefficient. Pay is below market rate, especially since most work is contract-based with federal caps that limit what you can earn, even for experienced devs. Travel compensation is terrible…you’re only paid for half your time when on the road, which adds up to a real financial hit. Some projects end up being boring with little input on assignments, and the culture feels stagnant with limited opportunities for technical growth or advancement. CEO Lisa Avila’s leadership contributes significantly to these issues, her approach often feels disconnected from day to day realities which comes across as unprofessional and erodes trust. Overall, there’s a sense that executive direction lacks the strong, supportive vision needed to guide the company effectively and keep talented people motivated.
