Pros

Small company environment with potential for diverse project exposure.

Cons

Poor Travel Compensation: Only paid for half-time when traveling for work, which creates financial burden on employees. Lack of Strategic Vision: Company operates without clear 3-5 year strategic planning. Management relentlessly chases DOD contract opportunities (SBIR and DARPA) that vary throughout the year without coherent direction. DARPA has largely lost its innovative edge, and SBIR programs often feel more like welfare than meaningful R&D. Weak Program Management: Terrible transition performance across all programs, indicating poor project execution and handoff processes. Limited Technical Leadership: Severe shortage of senior technical staff leaves junior employees without proper mentorship and guidance needed to develop their skills professionally. Management Issues: Despite being a small company, it has developed a big company bureaucratic feel with too much middle management. Many managers lack the "give a damn" attitude essential for success. "Small company with a big company feel." Toxic Leadership: CEO has a pattern of gaslighting high-performing employees, creating a demotivating work environment. Compensation: About 20% below market value with respect to DoD R&D service companies. 100%+ lower than Silicon Valley tech companies.

Pros

Opportunities if starting out career especially if you like military stuff

Cons

I’ve been here for a while and it used to be great. I used to learn a lot from senior employees but they have been replaced with cheap juniors and interns.

Pros

It was an OK job while it lasted!

Cons

When I joined Kitware, I was told that the company valued long-term employee retention. However, I was blindsided when, after receiving a 16% raise one year, I was unexpectedly laid off just six months later due to “unexpected government contract terminations.” The news was delivered by the CEO, Lisa Avila, through an impromptu Google chat call on a random Wednesday, instead of being handled by my manager as it should have been. To make matters worse, my manager was on vacation at the time and hadn’t even been informed of the decision. This lack of communication and professionalism was disappointing. Fortunately, I found a position at a better company that pays twice as much and isn’t overly reliant on unstable government contracts and provides a more secure work environment.
