A Dead End

Pros

Good benefits (minus a weak retirement plan). Reviews were on time and mostly fair and raises were given accordingly.

Cons

No employee development of skills or hope of advancement. We were encouraged to look for employment elsewhere, even job announcements were shared with us. There was very little encouragement to get certifications, more education or to acquire new skills. The aged management in the Environmental Health Division only expressed concern over budgets and saving face after an employee satisfaction survey which was ultimately used against us. Do not go to work here if you are serious about public health.

Pros

Benefits are quite good, better than much of the private sector. Healthy mandatory retirement plan. Salaries are reasonable, near 50% of median for each job sector. Management does communicate with staff. Staff has means to communicate with management at all levels.

Cons

Slow progression to top of retirement contribution rate (10 years). Commissioners sometimes become so focused on an objective that it appears that they lose sight of the repercussions of changes being made. Budget constraints are currently high. There will be budget shortfalls for the next couple years (at least) which will make for a very lean environment.

Pros

benefits and the people who actually do the work

Cons

to many "retired on the job" managers - collect big salaries - do nothing.
