Good work experience

Pros

Working with the kids is fun. The program really works.

Cons

The pay is low. As an experienced and credentialed teacher, I still only made $15/hour and it was cut to $13.50/hour when the economy was doing poorly. Parents pay $2,000 a week to send their kids there so as a teacher you only get a tiny amount of what is being paid.

Pros

the only pro? The illusion that you are helping a poor, disenfranchised child.

Cons

I had the displeasure of working here, and let me tell you, it was unsatisfactory. I feel badly for all of the parents who are ostensibly lured into paying an arm and a leg for some Walt Disney style hocus-pocus stuff. The most disturbing aspect? The woman who trained us was making fun of "retarded" students in the break room to one of the clinicians. I was shocked that people who worked for this company would say such things, let alone in the break room. I usually do not pay much attention to snide comments, but I felt these discriminatory remarks were in poor taste within the context of the company itself -- not to mention the area in which they were made. While we cannot control others, I refuse to work in an environment like this. In addition, the company is for profit, which is not necessarily a bad thing. However, if you think you might want to work with a diverse population, forget it. Clinicians are paid about ten percent of what the parents pay...a shame really, because the clinicians do just as much work as the other employees, and sometimes more.

The Peter Principle - Proven!

Pros

The opportunity to learn exceptional teaching methods - even an experienced Teacher - will learn new tricks here.

Cons

I agree with the post regarding a junior high culture. Over the top clique environment makes one feel like shouting - we are adults! Management misrepresents the hours you can expect to work. The best and most hours are given to management's favorites (not necessarily the best teachers) and men with children - overwhelming inequality practiced here. Management said they were grooming these guys for future at district office but they left in the summer to work elsewhere so that wasn't even true. Plan to have a back-up job when hours pare down halfway through summer.
