Pros

Macy's has a very clean store, and it's a job that does not require a degree.

Cons

We are simply selling things. There is zero need for the absolute stress heaped upon us by management. You would think we are there to sell things - that is not the truth at all. We are in the store to open credit cards, add customers to a my client list (so that Macy's can gather your information to sell? to others), clean the store for management visits, now enroll customers in a new loyalty program. Selling is last. We as store associates are under tremendous pressure from management to stand at the register to enter all sorts of information on every customer, but at the same time, we are under tremendous pressure from management to be on the floor to help the customers. We can't be in both places at one time. The push from management to add "every" customer to a secret client file that can be accessed by any Macy's management employee at any time is tremendous. We were told in training that a client is someone a relationship was built with, however, now we're told that every customer, even those purchasing a $1.99 clearance item, is to be added to a "my client" file. As more and more of Macy's customers are encouraged to shop online and not in the stores, it's quite apparent that Macy's is gathering this information to eventually eliminate all retail in store jobs.

Pros

You get awesome discounts 20% back of house + coupons. Awesome coworkers. In your time working there you will become close friends with at least one or two. Insight into how the retail business works; also, selling techniques. Tons of catalogs where you can find inspiration sent to your home. The ability to pickup hours in different departments keeps things interesting.

Cons

Horrible customers - I know that this is a generalization, and that there are customers that are wonderful, but in my experience there are a lot of customers that cannot be reasoned with. For example, when processing a return you need a proof of purchase and a UPC. There are customers that will throw away the tags and get upset with you and expect you to know what the UPC is. I've also experienced people using the fitting rooms as bathrooms. As well as petty customers who will complain over something stupid; like how the music is too loud. Intentional under staffing - Macy's is a business and businesses care more about the bottom line. They will purposely under staff an entire floor just so they can have maximum profit margins. The problem is this leads to harried working environments that demoralize and burn people out quickly. Low pay/high pressure - There are times when they will set your sales goal to 1,500 on a slow Monday and expect you to open credit when are there are not a lot of customers. It's almost as if they set you up to fail.

Pros

CUSTOMERS ARE AWESOME & Upper management outside of stores are excellent.

Cons

Department managers are very comfortable in their positions and are not holding all staff to the same standards, they pick and choose who they like and this is not based on attendance, integrity and/or any of the philosophies and standards that have made Macy's what it is today.
