Pros

The only think that keeps me here is the cosmetics brand I represent, not Macy's.

Cons

1. Opening Macy's credit- since I've been here they have been worse and worse with harassing us to open up credit. They expect 3 credits a week from full timers. It's ridiculous! It feels like a sweat shop sometimes. 2. NO COVERAGE- there has been so many times where I'm running around three counters, taking care of customer service issues while trying to sell to a line of customers and meet my sales goals. Unrealistic expectations. 3. Being a college student- going to school part time and working full time is stressful. But Macy's has made it horrible for me. They will not work with your school schedule and are completely inflexible. You need to talk to multiple people to get any thing changed here. My schedule plus will lock certain days and make it mandatory to work. My store manager told me during a conversation about my school schedule, "at the end of the day we have a business to run, so I'm sorry no." They don't care about their employees! They see us as machines for their credit and thanks for sharing goals. 4. FORCING every employee to work on holidays- if the CEO of Macy's can spend Thanksgiving with their family I'd like to be at home too. It's like a prison. Such horrible mistreatment to Macy's employees.

Pros

there are no pros to working at macys

Cons

they hire you on the premise that you should all be team players yet they treat the employees like slave laborers. the store is run horribly (east Brunswick NJ). theres no system and they expect employees to be everywhere at once, and have no problem humiliating you in front of customers. the store is looking very schlocky (poor management?). needs updating, its dirty, carpet is filthy and worn out and a safety hazard, and theres poor air circulation and its stiflingly hot. they need to look at successful stores that are better run, such as kohl's that has a separate return and customer service area which makes it run more smoothly. there are people working strictly at the fitting rooms which keeps it cleaner and more accessible to customers, in macy's (EB NJ), you cant clean fittng rooms since theres no place to put the clothes removed from them (schlocky). they should also do away with the ipod which theyre trying to implement as a way to make sales and ring people up rather than only using the cash registers. its a horrific failure which makes a transaction three times longer, let alone the germs that are passed between customers who need to sign and press buttons with their fingers. and they tell employees who dont know how to use it that they will be fired on the spot if they dont use it. there is absolutely zero training, they put you in a room for two days in front a computer without explaining anything, and no breaks or lunch, then tell you go out and work.

Pros

The flexibility of scheduling and employee discounts were very helpful, especially as a part time student. As a commissioned associate, the extra money makes a big difference on busy sale days or during the holidays, and you really have to work for it.

Cons

There is terrible communication between management and associates on the floor about upcoming sales, policies, etc. When you start the job, you're thrown on to the sales floor with very little training. Because it's sales-focused, you're treated as a number and all that matters is meeting sales and loyalty quotas. The newest store manager in my location was completely disconnected from the employees, which made me feel like there was no clear leadership in my store. Despite working very hard, employees are rarely recognized unless it results in a positive number on our sales. Associates working in clothing departments feel the worst of it.
