Pros

Online schedule, you can pick up or drop shifts as needed, paid every week, very friendly employees, positive company values.

Cons

Not enough hours for workers. The job posting that I responded to for a seasonal merchandising associate stated that the position would receive 25-30 hours per week. When I went in for the interview, I was told that this was inaccurate and you would really only receive a few hours a week and there may be some weeks that you don't receive any hours at all, but you would be able to pick up more shifts as the store became busy. I took the job hoping that I could make up for hours by picking up shifts. At times there were no shifts to pick up and I ended up only receiving 3-5 hours a week if I was lucky! Another thing that bothers me is that when you are scheduled to work in merchandising at 6am, there is no direction as to who you should report to. At 6 am the store is dark and you wander around hoping to bump into someone that can help you figure out where you're supposed to be. Another thing is that management only focuses on sales associates and the sales teams. There never seems to be any rewards or recognition for the support teams. How do they think the merchandise gets to the floor for the sales associates to sell? It doesn't magically appear there. The support team works hard to get the merchandise to the floor to be sold.

Pros

Employee discount works on top of sales and coupons Pays slightly above minimum wage Pick your own schedule/hours 45 minute lunch break most of the time

Cons

NO HOURS. I was brought on as a seasonal person back in October, and I knew, being seasonal, you basically pick up whatever hours no one wants, but there WEREN'T ANY HOURS AT ALL to pick up. I had a fuller work schedule in November than in December, even though they have more and more sales and longer work hours in December. That doesn't make any sense. Now I'm just wondering why they even bothered hiring me or anyone else, since it seems like only maybe 5 seasonal people are getting any shifts at all. Their training is awful, is well. All they teach is how to use the cash register - and also that Macy's is wonderful - and even then it's only really basic stuff that you aren't going to remember when you're on the floor anyway. (And you never work with ringing up real merchandise in training, just all these cards that have pictures drawn on them. And you have to pretend to be the customer and swipe their cards and sign for them, which you wouldn't be doing on the floor) The store's "customers first!" policy is also awful. I know you want happy customers to come back, and I think it's fine to appease an angry customer by giving them a free handled shopping bag (we have to charge here), or whatever, but I really hate how the store will go way over themselves to please a customer who is being ridiculous (it's not the cashier's fault your coupon won't work on EDV merchandise! And it says it won't work on EDV ON THE COUPON! It's not MY fault you left your bag in another department when I wasn't even on the floor yet, stop yelling at me!), while leaving the employees in the lurch. The manager/store's pushing on you to push the credit cards and Thanks For Sharing. Most of the people either 1) have a card already, 2) are only buying a couple cheap things and don't want to spend 10 minutes signing up for a card, 3) aren't going to get approved anyway, 4) already have Thanks For Sharing, or 5) signed up for Thanks For Sharing last year and didn't think it was worth it so don't want to sign up this year. They look at your statistics for how many accounts or TFS you opened if you want to stay on after the holidays. But it's so hard, especially if you're young and inexperienced and aren't comfortable yelling at people that they should open a card while you've got a long line of people and the phone is ringing and you forgot how to open a new account anyway.
