Pros

-Fair Pay -Free snacks and drinks -Standing desks -Great IT dept that works quickly to get your problems fixed -Some great people with good senses of humor--this is what makes it tolerable -Free meal one day a week

Cons

Office: 2-story open floor plan. You'll be sitting one-two feet away from someone on either side of you. There's absolutely no privacy and everyone gets to hear everyone else release gas, blow their nose, etc. B/c it's just desks smashed against each other, there's no place to stash your stuff. Your bag will be against the next person's ankle. If this is your first job, you won't know any better, but believe it or not, other companies at least provide a divider or several feet of space b/w you and the next person. Communication: Like saying Thank You to the person sitting next to you? Forget it. All communication is done thru Slack. Perfect for the loner who hates people. Projects: There are 5 ways to track your projects b/c the company refuses to invest in one Project Mgmt System, even tho they make millions of dollars. So there are a bunch of free/cheap software programs in beta that do one thing, and others that keep track of other things. It is impossible to keep track of what's due, when meetings are, etc. Also, a bunch of important updates are done thru multiple Slack channels. This is great is you have a combo of ADD and OCD, but hard to deal with if you're just trying to get work done. Vacation: You have to beg and get approval from multiple people to take time off. You are better off planning a trip and calling in sick, rather than being guilt-tripped about taking time off. Again, most young people won't realize that vacation is something you should actually have, and since there are so many young people here, they probably don't know any better. Meetings: Too many, too long, and filled with information not relevant to what everyone's doing. When you have a lot of work on your plate, it's a waste of time. Work-Life: Some people work extra long hours, but others don't. Depends on your role. Safety: If I was a girl, I wouldn't want to walk to the office from the train station. You'll be stepping over used condoms, broken glass, and human feces, while also dodging people yelling in the street. I feel a bit unsafe walking out of the office in the evenings when it's dark.

Thank you for taking the time to provide us with your thoughts and valuable feedback. First, and foremost, the safety of our Madison Reed family is a top priority, which is why the company provides Lyft Safe Ride credits allowing our team members to safely travel to/from our office. We encourage you to utilize the credits as needed. If you’re unsure or have forgotten how to access your credits, no problem! Please reach out to the People team to get a refresher on how to do so. Space is definitely a hot commodity in San Francisco so we hear ya and can appreciate your concerns. We’re growing FAST and sometimes keeping up with space constraints has its challenging moments. That said, we’re actively working hard to develop a plan that can accommodate our growth as we continue to quickly scale throughout the remainder of the year. In the meantime, we want to ensure your work area remains comfortable allowing you to be your most creative and productive self. We encourage you to please share these and any other comments with the folks on the People team so we can work together toward a solution. Thank you!

Pros

CEO is chill and inclusive and engages with her employees.

Cons

There is no work life balance, they overwork you and make you work over your breaks. You can take up to 24 clients with no fifteen or worked over your fifteen minute break, and the booking system will even book over your state mandated lunch breaks. I vented multiple times to address this issue and Madison reed said this was normal protocol to book over lunches. If you love passive aggressive emails from your upper management than this is the company for you. There is no verbal communication, it’s all through slack and emails and you are expected to write back immediately even if you are not scheduled, and if you don’t, they reprimand you and write you up. Even on your days off when you aren’t getting paid you are expected to handle client issues. They want you to work over 8 hours and over 60 if you’re a GM and they do not give you fair pay for that at all in the salary roll. The turn over is insane because they are ruining peoples mental health and over working their employees. I gave my all to this position and the company will not recognize you for it, but replace you in the blink of an eye when you speak your true feelings. The Gm salary is less than a colorist and a shift lead and an assistant after taxes are taken out. They love to hire micromanagers and people to stay on you while you’re working and doing your job successfully. The amount of fear they Instill in you for your store being a little messy had us walking on eggshells and scared to have upper management come in. I worked off the clock so many times removing color stains. This job will ruin your mental health and passion for hair. CEO is great though. Alll upper management and hair color bar management is horrible including district managers. STAY AWAY

Not for everyone

Pros

Since the company is growing, they make it seem like your opinion does matter. The spend a lot of money on employee appreciation. Fast pace and you can make money quick. Strong CEO!

Cons

NO work life balance whatsoever. This would be a job for someone who is single or strictly dedicated to their job no family or children. You will work 24/7 if you are on salary. As the GM the expected a work week is a minimum of 45+ hours. You are on call 24/7. There is no verbal communication it is 90% email, slack, or text. You are expected to answer immediately and deal with all situations. If not, you would be reprimanded. The clientele is huge! Not a bad thing, however there is not enough or payroll to accommodate for the guest. So, you are taking over 20+ clients a day and expected to manage the salon and perform everything else. Leading you to easily work a 55+ hour week which is "normal" I worked over 10 hours an any given day worked over my breaks and lunches. I work when I get home from work, when I wake up each morning I start working from home all on top of being at the color bar for 10+ hours. Mandated conference calls on your days off or any calls. Upper management is nothing but micro mangers. They say there is room for growth but its strictly politics. They talk about culture there is none. They hold feelings which prevents you from every having things confidential. I have been in the industry for over 12+ years and have had large work loads and I understand what it takes to do they back end work. However we are not a robot and are still human. This is job for someone who is newer to management and wants to grow. This is for someone who doesn't have a life outside of work. Maybe good for someone relocating to the area looking for a job? Best of luck to the company and the workers.

Pros

This is the best company I have worked for, full of very smart people, difficult challenges, very experienced people to learn from and a very authentic culture that puts the happiness of its customers and employees before every decision that gets made. It's really touching to see how we are changing women's lives with a great product and great technology. The customer support team is incredible. It's a very inclusive and diverse company, very transparent with all the employees about problems, opportunities and state of the company. From a technology standpoint, we are a small team of engineers that are exposed to different technologies and complex problems. We have great freedom to explore new ideas and great leadership.

Cons

Due to the small size of the company, engineering, design and product operate still as separate teams that sometimes lack communication between them. I think that reorganizing these areas into small business units composed of engineers, designers and pm's would improve communication, performance and ownership.

Pros

A lot of talented people work at Madison Reed. The company culture is great, they focus on building real leaders and not so much about embracing those who just whine. They also have the best customer service that I have ever experienced and witnessed. They truly care about the customer and that shows in the decisions that get made at the company. Very open to new ideas and embracing the culture of making a decision, even if it was a mistake and learning from it.

Cons

Communication is always something that is difficult to master with diverse communities of people, with diverse backgrounds. It's not that people don't trust each other, but it's more of, being polite, correct and not wanting to step on anyones toes. I am sure folks are receptive to feedback, but there is a fear of just displeasing someone, to the extent that important feedback about ideas or peers is sometimes lost in the cloud of being nice.
