Fun place to work, upper management has no idea of what happens at the store level

Pros

You can practice instruments in your spare time. You get satisfaction in helping beginners start their musical careers. Easy to get time off. I really enjoyed the other associates I worked with. You get to network with a lot of teachers and other musicians.

Cons

Very poor benefits. You are often judged based on unrealistic sales goals. Upper management has absolutely no idea about the challenges associates face while working in the store. The store is basically geared towards beginners - there are no professional level instruments (you have to order them) and there is poor sheet music selection. During rental season, Music & Arts does an awful job at informing customers about security deposts, which makes for awkward transactions on the sales associates end in trying to explain why this was not communicated to them.

Pros

It is a relatively stress-free job for nine months out of the year. It's easy to get time off when you need it and the vendor discounts are great if you are a musician. Most of the employees are easy to get along with and drama free.

Cons

However, the other three months when "rental season" hits prepare for inane phone shopping that misleads the customers into thinking rentals are only $19.99 when they really have to spend $75 to get the instrument and all the accessories. Then you have to deal with mad customers. The upper management has NO IDEA what really goes on in the stores. They implement the most unconventional rules and ideas to make the company "succeed", but they do not work and just end up costing the company money in the long run.
