One Bad Apple Spoils The Bunch

Pros

NRG as a company tries to have great culture with many initiatives, great communication from CEO, fun perks, good pay, benefits, and PTO. Most people are great to work with. Some flexibility in remote work. Recommend this company for position outside of sales.

Cons

Company culture is severely affected by certain members of upper management. Opportunity for growth is limited and completely based on favoritism not education, experience, success, or tenure. Micro management is high. Lack of boundaries and discrimination, especially around politics and opinions on current situations like Covid-19, vaccines, etc. Though the company is mostly liberal or neutral, this department is very conservative and if you don't align with that you're not in the inner circle. Lack of empathy and trust for those not in the "club". Too much bleed over from personal opinions that affect real business decisions. Unfair treatment of those outside of inner circle. Excessive finger pointing and criticism, even when exceeding goals and metrix, with not enough direction from leadership. No focus on innovation or growth. Can do no right attitude. Leadership feels that they know more than the feet on the ground and won't listen to feedback that doesn't support their limited and outdated views. Can you say confirmation bias? Many time consuming tasks are unessential to sales growth or job performance, and more to check up on employees who are currently being picked on. These also distract from the real work. Narrow minded leadership is not forward facing, and want things to be back as they were 10 years ago, while saying they are pushing for growth. Bullying and nitpicking from management is time consuming, exhausting, and very demotivating. Butts in seats, micro managing employees' schedules, and limited work life balance due to those lack of boundaries. Most people afraid to speak up or give a differing opinion even though all agree that these things are happening, even most of those in the inner circle. They are all afraid to stand up and lose their status so they allow the bullying to continue as long as it doesn't affect them. Leadership wants a physical return to office for collaboration, but current practices don't allow for true collaboration or innovation whether remote or in person.

Fairly Nice Place to Work

Pros

Nice offices in Houston, TX and Princeton, NJ. Decent benefits. Great annual bonus. Still have co-pay plan as well as high deductible plan for health insurance but only one choice of provider in each region. Most employees are friendly and work hard. Company has a nice incentive/rewards program to encourage healthy living but it is going to be eliminated next year.

Cons

Must work in Princeton to be noticed and promoted outside of the retail business based in Houston. No 9/80s; no employee stock purchase plan-eliminated in 2017; only 4% 401k matching-eliminated annual contribution based on salary; layoffs for last two years. Workforce is younger and less highly paid. Culture is very protective of knowledge and position, probably due to fear of layoffs that have been ongoing for the last 3 years. Established employees don't help new employees unless required. Layoffs were handled badly although packages were fairly generous. Can't compare with working at Chevron, Shell, etc. Open office environment of long desks in Princeton but Houston is now better and everyone has a cube.

Pros

Decent benefits and decent pay.

Cons

Dominating figures in management led to no personal grown and vindictive atmosphere. If you're un-liked for whatever reason, be prepared to feel like you'll lose your job at any moment. Not many people work there for more than 5 years.
