Great people, engaging mission, challenging project, interesting science.

Cons

Many positions are only for a designated time period instead of permanent. Currently NEON is going through a transition period but moving in good direction.

Pros

At one time NEON was staffed by many exceptional scientists and engineers, and enjoyed good positive leadership. The conceptual framework for developing NEON was groundbreaking for ecology, and the systems-engineering application to ecological science unprecedented.

Cons

But concepts and application of time-tested approaches would never be sufficient given the many challenges faced by NEON. Chief among these are exceptionally poor leadership - without vision, without compass, without any sensibility for how to build the facility and employ it for the greater good on behalf of the NSF. Leadership since 2012 has been incompetent at best, dismissive of real challenges on average, and catastrophically destructive on occasion.

Decent salary, flexible work schedule, good benefits.

Cons

Lack of leadership, poor leadership, really no leadership... A very "silo" organization - zero "TEAM" mentality... Incompetent engineering designs which result in total chaos throughout the organization... Constant shift in deployment schedules and priorities... Policies and procedures are not enforced... Employees have NO accountability and management allows that... Executive staff does not run this like a business, just do whatever NSF says... NSF is a government agency - need I say more?!!!
