Pros

My immediate supervisor was great, except that she wouldn't go to HR if there was an ongoing problem between employees. Some of the other employees were wonderful to work with. And the workload wasn't oppressive.

Cons

I was subjected to a hostile workplace for about a year before I left. I confided in my supervisor and asked her to loop in HR because of the mistreatment and harassment I was undergoing at the hands of a faculty member, but she never did. She sympathized and agreed with me, in large part because she was also on bad terms with this faculty member. Perhaps she thought it would make her look bad to other managers if she brought this situation out in the open. Thank god I finally got another job and am out of there. (I'm working in a corporate job for a company that is much more friendly and compassionate to its employees, and the pay is great.) It's very cliche-ish and gossipy, and many people have worked there for a long time. Good luck being accepted if you are a new employee and don't already have friends at NJH. The culture is very corporate--for example, they lay people off without warning, handing them a box and escorting them to the parking lot. There is also a great divide between the "common workers" and the management. And a couple of managers that I worked with were very duplicitous and back-biting. Also, they aren't doing well financially. The sort-of-merger with St. Joe's has not been profitable, and budgets keep decreasing. If you have a choice between working at CU and NJH, go with the University. I've worked both places, and the U is a much superior workplace with a lot more vacation given to (exempt) employees right from the outset.

Pros

Having a job The people who do the front line work are awesome Pay is okay Gives you skills to take elsewhere Work parties and food is often brought in They are ALWAYS hiring Some of the people you help quit are inspiring

Cons

On a bad day management makes it worse. Employees are not valued no matter how hard you work, you get treated like you are doing the bare minimum. Switching schedules every three months take a toll on you, especially when you consistently get bad options. No training for management. They need it. They do not work with your accomodations. The Hr department pretty much sweeps things under the rug.So many people have depression from the work environment it is sad. All you can do is grin and bare it.

Pros

Good experience with individual teams. Nice campus, physicians, researchers, nurses, etc.

Cons

Terrible benefits relative to other jobs/hospitals. Little sick time and personal days. Terrible insurance options. No hybrid or flexible work even when available. Very strict break/HR policies. They state that you must take 2 10 minute breaks per shift. But these “breaks” include drinking water, using the bathroom, talking about anything non work related with a co-worker’ etc”. So many workplaces are evolving and finding ways to allow more employee flexibility but National Jewish Health is not about that at all.
