Pros

Stability, work/life balance, great overall benefits, flexible work schedule, overall respectful environment. This is not a company for everyone - it's best for people at a certain stage in their career when they are looking for the aforementioned things.

Cons

It's a very matrixed organization, everything is done by consensus, people are not willing to make decisions, a lot of unnecessary things get escalated up the management chain for decision making, slow moving changes, too much defending of turf, superficial and unnecessary need by some to display their position in the hierarchy. On a different note, since the offices are located downtown Chicago, there really is no good place to live that would be close to work - it's a heck of a commute for lot of people. But they keep commuting because of all the positive things at Northern Trust.

Pros

With the current market environment, I'm glad to be working for a company like Northern Trust, which in putting our clients first, we are able to be fair to shareholders and employees. Many people argue that the culture is the most valuable part of working at Northern Trust. It's true. Like-minded people who put their clients first and are looking for a job that offers them a work/life balance find Northern to be perfect for them. If you want to challenge yourself, and be rewarded for your individuality and hard work, Northern is not the place for you.

Cons

Working in outlying offices, there are NO opportunities for advancement. Communication is poor considering the multitude of methods that can be used to communicate with employees. Compensation on both the fixed and variable pay structures is poor.

Pros

Work/life balance, Stability, Senior Leadership is strong, Because Northern doesn't want to pay unemployment for firing people, you have to really mess up several times to get canned.

Cons

It's very cliquey. The pay is crap. The technology is very old (AS500? Really?). Creativity is shunned. Personality is shunned. It isn't what you know/do, but who you know/do. Canal Street workers are treated like second-class citizens.
