Pros

I see below that someone left a one star review regarding sustainability of the company. Not sure what this person's definition of sustainability came from, but both financially and operationally, I am very impressed by the growth of the company. There are so many talented smart individuals who genuinely care about the product and business. This company has a bright future ahead.

Cons

There needs to be a bigger space soon to keep up with growing number of employees. The space appears to be getting a bit tight.

Five stars on so many levels

Pros

The best thing about Oblong is the people: Smart, dedicated, engaging, witty, multi-dimensional. This is the kind of place where there are too few not too many people, so you have a great opportunity to impact the business. You get to work on challenging problems but with super chill people who are just as comfortable discussing 17th century Dutch architecture as they are talking games and code. Benefits are solid -- better than most -- and no one is babysitting your every step. That being said, everyone works really hard so this is not a place for loafers or the insecure. Consistent sales growth indicates good upside. Small company but already international.

Cons

Because you make your own way at Oblong, those craving structure and clear direction won't do well. There is also a domineering head of sales who can upset plans in pursuit of his own agenda.

Oblong is a great fit for those who work well independently, though as we grow, we are becoming more structured and roles are becoming more defined. I’m glad you feel your work is challenging and that the benefits here are solid!

Pros

Endless supply of challenging technical problems you won't find anywhere else. Incredibly smart and engaging colleagues. Goofy and casual, yet also professional, culture and work environment. Great benefits: healthcare and childcare premiums are totally paid for, pretty good lunches, commuter benefit, etc.

Cons

The software stack/platform (g-speak) is totally proprietary, so it's unfamiliar to new hires and skills learned aren't readily transferable to other employers. Critical internal services are down way too often. No 401(k) match.

Agreed! I cannot overstate how very important it is that we are having fun at work. No one ever changed the world doing something that was boring (to them). To your point about transferable skills, I think we’ve built a reputation for hiring in the top 1% and several of our former colleagues are working at organizations similarly renowned for the quality of their engineering and design practices. Looking across our tech stack today, we are using React, Docker, Kubernetes, Redis, Go, C++, OpenGL, Swift, Android etc, all technologies that are very much in favor!
