Pros

Prefacing this with: Many of the 1 star reviews are former employees who got dealt a bad hand or honestly just couldn't cut it. Some of what they say is true, but they clearly use this page to vent frustration to management so prepare a lot of grains of salt as you continue down the page. Some stuff they say is just wrong, tried to be honest in my review here. Real Pros: - You can go really far really fast, position, responsibilities, pay (although starting is low relatively) are all high variance, get lucky or be good and you'll have a great time. - Tech is good, I don't care what people write about it being behind, even if it is (I wouldn't know), we're clearly taking more money from competitors than ever before and its growing every year and a lot of it comes from tech. - The People. Most employees at this company have only worked in one place so they do not understand the caliber of some of their coworkers in both skills and generally as quality humans. The best and most interesting people I've ever met have been through this company. - Under New Management, company recently reorged and it gave people that I have extremely high confidence in opportunities to move the firm in the direction of growth and hopefully press for changes at the top. If they cant achieve meaningful change, I'm wasting my time here, but I believe in them. - Really the people, some people are absolutely amazing and I would follow them to any firm they hopped ship to if they were hiring. If you work here and aren't in C Suite, I'm sure you know who these amazing people are and if you don't, go get a drink with Ruiz. - Sometimes the Founders/CSuite do really good things externally, smart acquisitions, good integrations and planning for long term. External -> Internal has been good via acquisition recently

Cons

- Empty Generations, Firm is heavily reliant on hiring and firing as a management style and 'radical changes' are terribly spun as 'good and necessary' leading to lumpily shaped experience curves at the firm, there are clearly going to be situations down the road where there is 'no good internal hire' for important management positions. This happened in tech recently, you can read other tech reviews to get a feel for how that's going. - Landmine Managers and Situations, some 'lifers' at the company who have made it deep into management will ruin their reports careers for brownie points with the C Suite and get a graceful placement managing something else when they fail again, usually something brand new, so the stakes are lower. Have seen this run through multiple times, same people. Had a perfect fit hire (experience, pedigree, 9 yards) for a new department at firm, saw who's running it, decided to recommend they avoid the role, I would be a bad friend otherwise. - Need to know when to lay-low or 'duck' from an oncoming whim of the founders. There aren't many people here who have jumped around businesses or stood out in a storm and stayed. See the above. A few do well, again high variance. - Alcohol Culture

Pros

A very successful and adaptable firm that's made it through thick and thin in the markets and grown quite a bit. Some extremely talented people. Technologists and analysts are respected and regarded as partners. Can feel really innovative and fast-paced. Some really interesting things to work on. Good support so you can focus on the things you want to do. Committed to education.

Cons

As is common in the industry, middle managers are often selected for talents and skills other than management and so they've got things to learn. Commitment to diversity and civic engagement are weak.

Thanks for your feedback. It’s especially great to hear feedback on areas within our culture since those are areas in which we’ve been actively investing a great deal of time and resources. So it’s good to know it’s paying off. The other areas you touch on are also very important to us and ones where we continue to try and improve. In fact, if you have specific ideas, please reach out and share — I would like to hear your thoughts on how you think we can be better in those areas. Pros

Peak6 is incredibly generous when it comes to providing its employees with unlimited candy, carrots and string cheese. The partner's art collection is one to marvel at when you get situated every morning at your workstation.

Cons

Management can at times be detached, uninterested and unavailable to the employees. The cultural perplexities require solid game theory skills just to navigate the very political landscape there. The playing field is full of hidden booby traps so tread with caution.

Thanks for your feedback. We definitely do encourage an open, transparent culture. And we agree -- a political, bureaucratic culture doesn't support our core values. It sounds like your experience isn't aligned with our values and the environment that we want to foster, which is not OK. Please feel free to reach out to me directly at bgoldberg@peak6.com so I can more specifically understand the concerns to address.
