Pros

Some of the departments have strong group culture, managers are flexible with hybrid work environments/let you work odd hours, great health benefits, they give a struggling employee a lot of chances before firing them.

Cons

company is regarded as an "old boys club", once you become a mid-level engineer they will overload you with work and will not provide enough resources. It is not easy/well defined how to become a shareholder, there are not good project managers, most PM's were hired for who they know and their seniority, not for their project management skills. This division is losing senior engineers as well because other companies pay much more. Shareholders only make up 16% of the company, and get huge returns but they will not increase most of their employees salaries.

Thank you for taking the time to write your review. We've recently increased our shareholder percentage and are hiring a compensation manager to help ensure that all employees are heard, included, and compensated fairly for their work. We appreciate you sharing your experience.

Excellent Place to Grow/Learn

Pros

POWER offers challenging and meaningful work that has a positive impact on the work. They are all about helping you grow in your career path that you get to help shape based on your interests. It's an employee owned company and they do make a good effort to help it be the employer of choice. Work life balance is very achievable and the company is very flexible with it's employee's particularly in remote or hybrid working environments. They do a great job considering the wider impact of their work in the community, environment and the world. They do a great job seeking to stay ahead of technology disrupters and in general being a very inclusive and welcoming bunch of folks who help each other across departments.

Cons

While they did increase the ownership cap to 30% of employee's they still have that artificial limit and likely more than 30% of the companies employee's are high-performers and merit receiving ownership. I think the ownership consideration/evaluation of ownership candidates by the ownership committee needs to be more transparent and objective. There is still as strong sense of it's who you know and who your known and liked by that factors strongly into their decisions.

Thanks so much for your feedback, and we're glad you're having an overall positive experience with POWER! We're currently working on a communications plan around the criteria for ownership—we recognize that transparency is vital in this area. In the meantime, we encourage speaking with your manager about how you can be considered for shareholder status in the future. Thanks again for your honest review; we always appreciate hearing how we can improve.

Great Company

Pros

The management team wants you to succeed and will do everything in their power to make it happen. Work is consistent and diversified. Benefits, such as healthcare and retirement, are great compared to other companies in the sector. Limitless opportunities for advancement. Company cares about the health and safety of their employees and is currently revamping their EHS processes to make them easier to use and comply with. Head safety officer still conducts field visits to truly understand what obstacles are faced in the field. Multiple employee engagement opportunities to make sure that employees feel like they belong to a bigger family such a two company meetups per year and many smaller events locally. CEO is engaged and actively vocal about the needs of their employees. Depending on the manager, schedule is flexible. Company offers at office/hybrid/fully remote options with home office stipend. Power truly believes in investing in local communities and provides 8-hours of paid volunteer time to be used at the discretion of the employee. Review periods occur two times a year, one in July for annual salary adjustments and one in November/December for bonus review. If you’re proactive, driven, curious, and determined, PMs will notice and reward accordingly. PTO is typically approved without hesitation if given ample advance warning.

Cons

In Texas, majority of wetland work is focused in the Atlantic Gulf Coastal Plains near Houston and surrounding areas - as a delineator this region is typically problematic and difficult to work in during the spring/summer months. Would like to have more diverse fieldwork. PMs cater to on the whim demands of clients which causes for stressful turnaround times, bottlenecks, and work overload. Deliverables are client dependent, minimum cohesiveness between reports from different clients. Which causes confusion of what is expected as the PM might have a favorite report that is not necessarily the most recent. Standardization of expectations are lacking. Work load, while typically consistent, usually wanes on the heavy side, making work-life balance difficult. PTO is limited with the standard 2 weeks for vacation/1 week for sick leave. Frustrating as other companies in the sector tend to have more lucrative PTO packages. Can be easily pigeon holed if not vocal about needs.
