Pros

Staff discount 15% Gain knowledge about lots of different kinds of animals Access to info and sometimes chances to adopt animals with problems for free Longer hours mean it can work with a student's school schedule They are tolerant of tattoos, piercings and alternative looks The animals are taken care of well

Cons

Manager jobs are all about politics. District managers will hire their friend or favorite from another location without even giving a chance at promotions within the store. Pay lower than many other starter jobs. 10.00 per hour and any pay increases you get are negated if you leave and re apply later Managers do nothing to stop customer verbal abuse of employees Managers will write off tons of stuff for minor tasks but won't hire employees for an extra hour or two a week to staff the department properly and allow tasks to be done People can be utterly dishonest and incompetent and there is no system to fire them People can put in a ton of hard work and time and get no recognition Employees aren't permitted to call the review hotline to give feedback, even when they spend more money at the store than most other customers No benefits unless you are full time. No one is hired full time(unless you are a manager and you get a salary anyways) Scholarship program is offered to students only if they are working full time...which would mean they can't be a student.. You are forced to sign a contract saying you can't disclose anything about animals or policies when you are hired, so if you see something you are concerned about you are legally forced to keep your mouth shut.

Pros

Variety of tasks, working with animals, safety, paid time off, quick advancement, promotion of fair practices, training programs with compensation, some of the benefits package.

Cons

Very little discretion and independence, techniques for measuring success are unrealistic and unfair, you're expected to stretch resources which makes work difficult, lack of labor hours, and poor compensation for management.

Pros

Great pay for a part-time job, close to $9/hr. Great management Great policies Inter-working with all departments Opening in Pet Care is like feeding time at a mini-zoo. Getting to know customers and their pets on a personal level makes their shopping (and your working) experience MUCH easier, and fun! Pets come first! Pet Parent's questions and understanding of problems that are occurring in their fish tanks, or training new puppies, or how to keep reptiles are always important. It feels great to, for example, help someone out who had been previously killing all their fish because of a silly mistake (cleaning the aquarium entirely for water changes- very common).

Cons

Dealing with death. It happens, you have to get used to it. Mostly fish and crickets, than anything else. Opening in Pet Care is like feeding time at a mini-zoo. - Also sometimes a Con. Refilling hay-balls for both guinea pigs AND birds. Guineas constantly go through it, and birds will pull most of it out onto the bottom of their cage! Dealing with costumers who think adding 20 fish to a brand new 10 gallon tank all at once is a good idea, even if you warn them, they can still be persistent (and sometimes condescending).
