Pros

The value of working with so many different animals that need daily care is a huge benefit. You can see the excitement in their eyes when you appraoch the cages and get to know them. Petco provides proper training and a very strong support team to make the yearly goals happen.

Cons

Payroll is tight. Many days it is a manager and a cashier for several hours. This can either be frustrating or sufficient. Many days I have received delivery with only one cashier and had to leave the delivery to assist in aquatics, or reptiles, or for a carry-out.

Decent job for terrible pay.

Pros

Steady paycheck if you are a full time employee. A "non-professional" or "laid back" working environment. Awesome co-workers. If you are stressed there are birds, ferrets, or customer pets to play with.

Cons

Overall incompetence of management and employees. No hours given for basic store operations. Ridiculously disproportionate expectations on the job and no time to fulfill them. Decent animal care but with such little time allotted none of the animals are socialized. Our animal vendor is terrible too...I see more deceased and ill animals on a daily basis than I would care to admit. Did I mention not enough hours to run the store? Also, a terribly inaccurate inventory system. Very low pay for the expected job duties.

Not enough Time or Staff

Pros

Good Benefits, fair pay and decent on the job training.

Cons

There are not enough hours provided to get the job done at the expected level. This causes frustration and burnout. Most of the upper management worked at a time when there were more people per shift running the store. With animals to take care of, customers to wait on and stock to work it is surprising that a Petco store has less employees per shift then the local gas station. The focus is in the wrong places. Constant pressure to maintain a daily high score on surveys that do not truly reflect how the store is doing because any store that has less then the highest ranking is no good.
