Pros

The opportunity to get out and use your expertise in different industries is rare. It stretches your skill set and gives you the chance to learn about business sectors that are often tough to break into. Propeller is in many of the interesting fields in the Portland market: tech, apparel, energy, healthcare. The client diversity is exciting. The team is fun, smart and merges play and work as much as possible.

Cons

If you require predefined structure, hierarchy, a map of your 25-year career path, and grandiose titles that grow along said career path...this is not the place for you. If you always wanted to be a ________ (fill in the blank) since you were a kid, unless "consultant" or "problem-solver" or "ah-ha! generator" was the answer...this is not the place for you. Propeller thrives in the ambiguous transition spaces where most businesses struggle. This job does not come with an instruction manual. If that sounds exciting...this is the place for you.

Wow, you put that very well! It's true that we live in an ambiguous world. Often, we're hired to be agents of clarity or bring order to chaos. Thanks for the kudos on transparency and communication; we'll work to keep that strong. If you think of anything else, please let us know!

I thought too good to be true

Pros

When I was applying, I looked on Glassdoor and saw that they had 5 stars by EVERYONE who worked there. I thought it was too good to be true, but I went through the process which was rigorous - and made sure that I was a good fit for Propeller and Propeller was a good fit for me. The people are great... they are focused on making our clients successful and having fun. Everyone works together and encourages each other. Since I've been here, I've had my input listened to, contributed ideas to our approach, and been very impressed by the commitment to transparency of the principals and associates alike.

Cons

Hmmm... Sometimes I get to the office earlier than anyone else and have to make the coffee (which happens to be delicious).

It takes a lot of work to stay focused on making this company great so people like you will want to work here, but it's well worth it! We hire great people and then find out once they start that they're even better than we thought, with more talent and capacity than we imagined after that long interview process. That's our job though; we find the people who are multipliers. Please let us know when you see ways we can improve. We're a small company with great ambition and we know it takes a team to succeed. Oh, and thanks for making coffee in the mornings!

Motivated & Connected

Pros

Being a newer firm everyone's input is valued and your work on internal initiatives will help set up the future for the firm. This gives you great motivation to be successful and you feel connected to those you are working with. Because of this the team is very close and actually enjoys hanging out for happy hour, lunch, sporting events, and such. The pay is good for Portland being a smaller market and coming from a big firm the local feel really makes it easier to have a work/life balance. Lots of firms say they are dedicated to this balance but Propeller is my first experience that actually does it.

Cons

Being a smaller newer firm there can be bumps along the way in communicating and onboading, however being able to help improve and guide these bumps definitely overrides the original issue. As there is a desire and recognition to improve.

Great point: we want to make sure everyone's input is valued, no matter how big we grow. After all, who is better to help us keep our company great than a talented group of business consultants? And to maintain long-term relationships with our people we'll continue to encourage balancing work-life and personal-life, too, hopefully making both great. We've grown quickly and the best way to stay a great company to work for and with is to remain humble about our ability to improve. Thanks for the review and please let us know if you see ways we can do better!
