Apollo Ruined Rackspace

Pros

I worked for Rackspace over a decade and most of my time there was nothing short of amazing. I learned a lot and made many good friends. I was a Racker at heart.

Cons

However, once Apollo bought out Rackspace this was the beginning of the end. Rackspace is now just a shell of its former self. Apollo did not believe that Rackers were the secret sauce to Fanatical Support. Instead inexpensive labor and acquisitions was the new path to success. Ruthless layoffs have become the norm since 2017 and most of the replacements have been cheaper labor. The bottom financial line is what Apollo cares about most, not Rackers.

Pros

- pto / vto is available. - 401k

Cons

- pto / vto can only be taken when your not working the call center phone queues. - no senior benefits (benefits that were *promised*, pulled out from under the techs) and replaced by a point system run by a 3rd party storefront. I watched as $1000.00 10year bonuses were replaced by a mere handful of these points. Literally turning employee rewards back over to the company itself. - lack of promotion cycles for more than a year. - lack of training. Absolutely none to speak of _for half a decade_! As an ex-senior tech this is Disgraceful. It was a floor rumor that they were intentionally not training us to ensure we could not be picked up by competitors. - training that was 'available' to us was quickly filled with account managers and other non-tech personnel making VERY few slots available to real techs that required the training. - with all of the various meaningless KPIs meant to make our job make sense to leadership, it made it impossible to just do a fanatical job for our customers which is what we all wanted in the long run.

Pros

Generous amount of PTO. 180 hours. Great place to learn data center skills. Most employees are skilled and offer good collaboration. Offer to provide some training on new skills.

Cons

Well below industry standards for compensation of the Chicago, IL area. No ability to move up to another position due to outsourcing most internal teams to India. Moving up in role is also impossible as no one in leadership can explain what the next level is even responsible for. Pay raises might occur once a year for a 40 cent increase. Pay increase is based on tenure and not on talent or metrics. Raising issues with leadership is strongly frowned upon. To such an extreme that upper facility leadership asked each individual to stop commenting new problems. Leadership will falsely let you believe you can be promoted from L2 to L3/L4, but can't explain the differences in responsibilities. Pay differences between levels is only 1.5 difference. Those that have won promotions, were individuals chosen at random initially followed by individuals with close relationships with their direct reports. Leaderships inability to provide a safe, friendly environment has created a highly toxic environment where discussing ongoing issues is frowned upon and is disciplined. When an employee is found to be following a process incorrectly, leadership refuses to hold those individuals accountable. Leaving the DC in complete disarray and creates further animosity.
