Pros

I joined Rackspace like many other people by relocating. They have really tapped the local community of talent. The one thing I kept asking in the interview was how much people like their jobs. Overall, everyone said they "loved" their job. Once you start, you see that the culture is what attracts people to the company. Very laid back. The CEO even uses a cube, not an office. A couple of times a month there is a kegger party at work or a wine tasting. Very cool!

Cons

There is a lot of "kool-aid" drinking right as you start. You go through a process to convince you how great the company is. The entire time you really never get a sense of what you will be doing day to day, but (as a systems administrator) once you start the job..you quickly realize why there is so much kool-aid drinking. The job for a systems administrator is really a HELP DESK technician. There are times you will try to complete over 100+ help desk tickets. Oh, and you need to answer the phone too. Meanwhile, there is a carrot to promote you to a dedicated systems administrator. This is something everyone wants to do because the trouble ticket load is so high. They can't hire fast enough because the attrition is so high.

Pros

Rackspace is a unique and challenging place to work. Environment is flexible and allows you to try new things. Have not had much layoffs given the current economy. If you are looking for executive level positions you should get exactly the compensation and golden parachute you are looking for.

Cons

Every year the benefits get worse and cost more. Bonus structure metrics are changing all the time so that bonus payouts to regular employees can be decreased and have no real correlation to performance as an employee. Cost of living raises are frozen until further notice. All this while executive leadership makes millions on stock options and grants. Friends and Family company values are a joke these days. Most of the talented technical staff has long since moved on to other companies. Training and advancement departments are useless.

Pros

There are so few pros at Rackspace that few come to mind except the "believers". There are great people that come to work every day at Rackspace who really want to see it grow and be successful - that's true anywhere. But no one at Rackspace - absolutely no one - would give this place five stars. This is a marketing effort to improve Rackspace's Glassdoor scores.

Cons

Rotten Leadership across the board, starting with Amar, who was elevated from CFO despite never being a CEO, in a market brimming with Hyperscaler executives that could have thrown open doors of collaboration with AWS, Azure and GCP. I know from talking to leadership at each hyperscaler that Rackspace is perceived as a non-option among Client Execs and our churn rate must be among the highest. RIFs occur frequently but are unannounced and you only find out from the sad "I love this place but I am leaving" exit e-mails, or when they pop up elsewhere. I can keep going but what bother?
