Pros

- Knowing your work is changing kids' lives -Nice balance of work pace - some face-paced hours with all the tutors and children in the center, balanced with data analysis and other low-stress tasks at the end of the day. Never have to bring work home - when you leave, it's done. -Learning the ins and outs of nonprofit work and public education -Many opportunities for professional development - A nice balance of team work and independent work -Meeting a wide range of people in the community, great networking opportunities -As an Americorps position, it is tough to live on a stipend, but Reading Partners provides great benefits

Cons

- Things are constantly changing, so staying on top of your work and being flexible is a must - Your experience is very influenced by the people you directly work with, so some had a more positive experience with their peers and supervisors than others did. - While this position is open to all ages, I believe it is more ideal for people recently out of college - for older adults, you may feel like some professional development doesn't apply to you, or on the worst side, even condescended to.

Pros

Attracts a really driven, positive, and passionate AmeriCorps members and staff. Everyone feels strongly about education and serving students. Volunteers and schools have great feedback for the program.

Cons

Very disorganized internally and lots of tension between staff and AmeriCorps members. Even if you're part of staff, you can't enjoy most of the benefits (flexible scheduling, ability to work remotely) because the AmeriCorps members you manage are stressed all the time and work for very minimal pay. AmeriCorps members work long hours to fulfill hours requirements, but also because they're overworked. Lots of turnover among national and regional staff leads to instability and lack of investment in employees. Very top-down approach to management, while feedback is asked for issues and decisions that are trivial. Lots of talk about work-life balance but upper-level management does very little to enforce this.
