Pros

They are selective in their hiring, and it shows. It's great to work with very intelligent, creative, service minded people. It's a small team delivering a big program, so be prepared to work independently and take on many different roles. Be flexible.

Cons

Regional operations are often very spread out, so there is a lot of travel involved, plus plenty of telecommunicating and working alone. It relies heavily on AmeriCorps, so the majority of the regional teams turn over every year and a lot of time and effort is spent on training and getting new AC members through the learning curve.

Pros

Reading Partners is a great cause with lots of passionate staff and volunteers. Very team-oriented atmosphere & great for AmeriCorps members in terms of hands-on experience. (Full disclosure, I was a full-time AmeriCorps member, not full-time staff)

Cons

In Dallas and nationally, they grew very quickly only to experience some layoffs of full-time staff. At Reading Partners, AmeriCorps members do the majority of the ground work. While most are great, there is a risk of overloading inexperienced members with a heavy work load that they may or may not be prepared for. There are some growth opportunities beyond your AmeriCorps year, but not a ton.
