Pros

Very supportive managers, continuous training and education award for Americorps members upon completion of service term. Fun to work with children everyday and you get to meet lots of new people and network. Perfect for recent grads before going to grad school and contracts are year-by-year basis.

Cons

Low pay, but you know that going into it. Compensation is more than other Americorps programs though. Site coordinator position is temporary; you wouldn't do it more than 2 years.

Pros: Dedicated, passionate people Real opportunity to make an impact Good way to get experience working directly with a school and with students without the requirement of an Education degree/teaching credential

Cons

Cons: Inconsistent management and poor allocation of resources make the job frustrating at times Poor health insurance is something to keep in mind if you require good health coverage

Pros

Great mission and really has a front-line impact on education and the children who need help in reading the most. The schools and communities Reading Partners is in come to view you as one of them and as an integral part to overall student success. Site Coordinators gain great experience managing volunteers, students, and data and independently operating a site.

Cons

This is not an entry-level job. You never have only 40-hour weeks and with the AmeriCorps stipend you are pretty much a serf. Unless you are a staff member, there is no opportunity for growth beyond a second year. Could not wait to move onto another opportunity with better pay and opportunities for long-term growth. Often disorganized.
