Pros
In a supportive environment, a literacy tutor is able to develop a one-on-one relationship with an elementary school student while helping him or her learn phonics, reading comprehension, and fluency to achieve grade-level competency.
Cons
The management of the program in each elementary school is uneven and depends greatly on the ability of the site coordinator (who is typically an AmeriCorps worker right out of college) to match large numbers of students with large numbers of volunteer tutors.
