Pros

The benefits are great (superb 401k match and medical plans) The people -- the company has many good people working for it with a passion for its brands and consumers, but increasingly, they’re being sidelined, silenced, and pushed out. For any recruiters out there with openings to fill, begin your search at Reynolds American because this company’s employees are inordinately talented and know how to meet all challenges (plus, I'm sure many would welcome an exit opportunity).

Cons

Working at Reynolds American feels a lot like an episode of “The Good Place.” You wake up each morning, thinking you’re in professional heaven with a job that provides a solid base salary and great benefits. But then, the first email comes in, with an urgent “strategic” project that’s devoid of any semblance of actual strategy yet asks you to compromise your integrity. These messages keep coming in until finally you’re on your third cup of coffee at 6pm and you realize “wait, THIS is the BAD PLACE.” Let’s start with the bad. The newly installed senior leadership must share one (1) collective brain cell between all of them because they lack any ability to think critically or strategically. Faced with existential regulatory crises, leadership is not adequately preparing for a future where their number one product is banned by the federal government. Instead, they focus on self-promoting initiatives whose only strategic purpose is to look good on one slide of a PowerPoint deck to bolster their personal brands. Now let’s get to the worse – this leadership team transformed a collegial and collaborative corporate culture into a cut-throat environment. That one brain cell they share leaves them bereft of empathy or realistic expectations for their “strategic” projects. This means employees are increasingly asked to achieve the impossible without the resources, budget, timelines, or manpower to even come remotely close to success, leading to burnout. Furthermore, employees and managers who question leadership are frequently “retiring” or demoted. To say morale is low would be an understatement. For prospective employees, know that Reynolds is in terminal decline, led by a selfish and arrogant c-suite lacking vision and unprepared to lead this company through its many challenges. Reynolds has indeed become the Bad Place.

Pros

Good 401k match, company car, minimally acceptable vacation.

Cons

Entire organization is going through a several year reboot. Chaos from the top down and no one wants to be accountable for any decisions. Company vastly underpays its labor force using the excuse that other CPG companies do as well. 70% of 2020 net profits were given away to investors while employees who create that wealth were given shorted bonuses and less than cost of living raises. This company absolutely does not value its employees at all. Only take this job as a fresh from college graduate, and then stay only long enough to use it to get a better job.

Thank you for taking the time to write a review. Creating a culture of diversity and inclusion is one of our top priorities. To maintain the continuous progress we’re making, we have set bold, new diversity and inclusion ambitions. By 2025, we aim to reach gender parity in management roles and to significantly increase minority representation in management and senior management roles.

Pros

The car is nice, 401k match, family leave policy is excellent. Also, unlike another reviewer, I do appreciate the company's approach to dialogue and inclusion and the many issues surrounding race, and hope it results in real changes in how we hire and promote. I'm a white heterosexual man and I don't feel in any way "threatened" or "demonized" by these conversations. Frankly I found that other review embarrassing. Nobody's out to get you man, please relax.

Cons

The job has grown progressively more difficult over the past year. First of all, I don't really mind having to go out and work during covid. I'm just grateful to still be employed. Many people I know lost their jobs last year. This job is and remains a blessing for me. But I will say that while other companies have adjusted expectations and provided additional compensation for their essential employees, we haven't seen anything besides a couple of boxes of snacks and a massively increased work-load. I find that bizarre. But look. Two TMs on my team caught covid and they still had to make calls from home while sick. If they didn't make the calls they'd have missed out on 25% of their bonus. That, to me, is completely insane, and evidence that whatever the company says about being committed to the health and well being of its employees, the reality is different. I find it absolutely outrageous that they had to do that, and it's why I feel compelled to write this here. I also have a fundamental critique re: the change in the job itself. It seems we've lost sight of our main point of difference against the competition - our strong relationships with retailers. We used to have integrity. Selling and relationship-building are very difficult when the only thing a store owner wants to discuss is the several thousand dollars worth of vapor inventory that's sitting in her back room, not moving; best-in-class execution won't be much more than a memory if we fully commit to the new coverage model (which we will - it has been made clear there is no flexibility whatsoever on coverage moving forward); category leadership and the idea of being "a trusted advisor" is laughable when you raise prices 3-4 times in a year, adjust discounting just as often, and constantly push for more space that often doesn't even exist. The new approach may be many things, and it may look good to shareholders and people who don't go into the field, but in my view it is simply not conducive to steady, sustainable, organic growth in the market. There are all sorts of little things already pointed out by others so i won't waste time repeating them here, but the overall shift in how we do business and the extremely demanding workload have made it more and more difficult to enjoy the job and take pride in my work. And expecting people to continue working when they contracted a disease is immoral.
