Pros

Company car, though you must pay a monthly fee of $175. This fee is non-negotiable. Company matched 401K, which is standard for most Fortune 500 companies. I wouldn't be surprised if they decided to remove this perk. Health benefits are decent, but are nothing like they used to be in the past. Occasional meetings in nice venues

Cons

Where to start... Every new product launched, aside from vuse solo, has been a massive failure. TMs are expected to constantly force an entire portfolio down retailer's throats, only for the products to either be recalled or collect dust on the shelf. There is a reason that RJRT is #2 and that is because they fail to come out with products that consumers will buy. If menthol is banned, then RJ Reynolds is over. The workload on the TMs is ridiculous. Add in the fact that DMs and the AMs/KAMs are constantly having you do their work for them, such as training new-hires and managing meetings. If you fail to do these activities, which are really the responsibility of the DMs, then you could be slapped with a negative annual rating. Many DMs are petty and will write TMs up if they don't do exactly as they are told. TMs are not paid to think for themselves, but to force out coupons and merchandise the products. The company is always stating that TMs are salespeople, but we are treated as if we are too stupid to actually sell anything. It's a definite "good 'ol boy" system. Only those employees that upper management feels are worthy will ever be promoted. So if they like you, you're set. But if they don't, you'll be a TM in a terrible geography for your entire career. Management makes this decision shortly after you come on board and it's not based on performance, so keep this in mind. I have seen some great employees get passed over for promotions, while other TMs that can barely do the basics of their jobs are promoted. It's all based on who you know and if you have friends in management. For a career progression in trade marketing, there's only one trajectory. So if you want to transfer to a different department, you will be blackballed. The hiring standards are also very inconsistent. The company claims that they relocate new employees so that the employee demonstrates mobility, but some new hires are brought on that already live in or next to the territory. Obviously some employees are of a higher value than others. Consumer engagements are the biggest joke in the tobacco industry. They are humiliating to TMs and are a huge waste of time and resources. There's a reason why other tobacco companies don't have them: they are not effective and are potentially dangerous to their employee's safety. If you are looking to apply for a job in trade marketing, look elsewhere. If you MUST work in the tobacco industry, pursue Altria. They actually work with their employees to make them happy and have a better pay scale.

Pros

Good DM (unfortunately, not many of them left)

Cons

PAY!! Company car payment now up to $175/month, yet no increase for internet/cell phone allowance? So much money wasted on merchandising crap that is auto-shipped. At least 2x/year we have to hire 1800-junk ($600) to clear out about $10k of wasted material. Way too big of a product portfolio. It’s like you’re throwing whatever you can at the wall, to see what sticks. Endless packaging changes. Re-merchandising every 3 months..tedious, pointless work. Coming out with a product, yet not developing a fixture that holds all the styles. Having to write up talking points at year end to justify why you should get your bonus- which is all subjective. Having to do consumer engagements (800 coupons/year) and scan people’s ID. This is the worst part of the job. Overworked & way underpaid. Everyone is pretty salty about this company and where it’s going. They obviously don’t seem to care too much either- look at how far back these reviews go...have they made any positive changes? Nope! Quite the opposite!

Pros

Company car, 401k, work from home, great consumer products training and experience.

Cons

I have seen so many people over the years that gave their all to this company for advancement leave the company bitter with the feeling of being taken advantage of. Absolutely no positions available except to be an account manager? Where is the variety of opportunity? Where is the opportunity period? There are some TMs in the field who are awesome dependable leaders. It’s obvious when you work with these types of TMs how talented, knowledgeable, and passionate they are about the success of others. It’s sad that they will never get the chance to lead their own team because these best in class folks are not willing to move their families. So instead they hand out promotions to people that aren’t as great. In other words brown nosers with limited knowledge of the busines but are willing to go to Nowhereville USA. There are still passionate TMs in the field but in the last 2 years, we are losing them fast to other companies. There has been so much money and resources spent training a person only to have them jump ship to a competitor vapor company with our knowledge of our fundamental selling strategies. Do you think the competitor can take that training and turn it against us? They can and they do! The company still refuses to make pay competitive which leads to high turnover. Poach city. No exaggeration, there are over 100 vacancies for the Territory Manager position nationwide. People that have been in the field for decades stating they never seen it this bad. This is not counting people who are on medical leave for “stress” related issues. So there are way more open positions not posted... yet. Granted, there is turnover for your standard reasons. What company doesn’t? However, this company has turned its back on the people that work in the field for the last 3 years. What did they think was going to happen when you combine an unmanageable workload with fairytale expectations? The answer is high turnover and low moral.
