Pros

Incredible company growth lends itself well to internal mobility for employees in most (but not all) departments; Opportunity to work on interesting problems in novel ways; Very good pay, even better benefits.

Cons

A poor organizational structure results in overlapping responsibilities for many teams; lack of courage when it comes to firing underperforming senior leaders; some of the financials of the company--especially surrounding debt--are vague, perhaps intentionally so.

Best Engineering Team in Columbus

Pros

In looking for opportunities to make a large impact with a small team, Root is the best place to be in Columbus. We went through the arduous process of becoming an officially licensed insurance carrier so that we could build the ideal insurance experience. It's challenging, but rewarding, being a part of a 20-person company that's out-innovating the large insurance behemoths. I work on the engineering team, and we've built some great software. We created an entire platform to run an insurance company from scratch. Our backend is implemented in Ruby, and our mobile clients are implemented in React Native, with some bits in Swift for iOS and Java for Android.

Cons

Root supports a great work/life balance, but while we're in the office, we get work done. Fun little side conversations do pop up periodically, but it's far more focused than most work environments. Some people aren't used to working 40 hours a week, despite spending 40 hours a week in an office. If you like lazily drifting through a work week, this won't be the best environment for you.

Pros

Work from home, fully remote

Cons

Unlimited PTO is great, but only if you can actually use it. PTO calendar is currently blocked because the service levels are so bad. They use that as a major selling point to get you in the door and then completely go back on it. There is ZERO flexibility in the schedule at all. The micro managing is like nothing I have ever seen. Even though you are remote, it feels like you are chained to your desk. Workforce management is a complete joke and couldn't do a decent daily schedule even if someone else did it for them. You'll spend 30 minutes on a call, then have 90 seconds to type your notes and complete everything perfectly to pass an arbitrary audit, all before your phone rings again which you can't ignore because it is set to auto answer. The process guides might be some of the worst guides I have ever seen. Poor layout, unclear and confusing, vague, and these are what you are pushed back to if you ask for help. This is just scratching the surface too.
