Pros

Compensation is competitive in some roles Benefits are good and cost effective, especially for families Communication to leadership regarding company wide changes is improving

Cons

"Unlimited" PTO is only relevant for certain roles and even if this in your offer letter, leadership can choose not to honor it HR team is lacking, has a ton of turnover, and is disrespectful and unapproachable at times Some leaders are toxic and do not live the company values Concerns about outsourcing in certain roles Lots of reorgs, at one point I had 4 new leaders in 5 months Attrition continues to be on the rise across multiple departments Leaders do not post all jobs and tend to favor friends or people they have worked with in other organizations over tenure & qualifications Review process is a cluster and unorganized, during mid-year reviews some positions receive increases while others do not Morale & engagement has really struggled since moving to work-from-home

Hi, there. While we're glad to hear there were certain aspects of your time at Root that you enjoyed, this doesn't sound like the overall experience we want for our team members. Pros

There are some very smart people working on the data science team at Root. Oh, and there's "free" lunch.

Cons

There is little to no cohesive data science "team" environment; I had taken the job hoping to collaborate with all of the smart people around me, and instead was thrown onto an island all by myself with nothing but a laptop and a smoking hot mess of unintelligible data with no documentation. Typical startup culture, but inexcusable nonetheless. The management, or lack thereof, is appalling. I was encouraged to take hacky shortcuts regularly in my work, but if I had suggested such practices during the 8 hours of interview examination, I'm not so sure I would have been offered the position in the first place. Everything in the name of time! If you're interested in cooking up lots of quarter pounders as fast as you can, then this is your place. If you've done a graduate degree in a technical field and are eager to produce quality, thorough results, I would suggest looking elsewhere. And I would also recommend, if you can help it, adopting the male gender prior to your employment start, as your credibility will likely be in constant question should you identify as a female.

Pros

- The OG employees are wonderful and truly care about the company - Decent PTO

Cons

- Customer Service has turned into an old boys club. If senior management does not like you, you’ll never go anywhere. - No employee development - Toxic Culture - So focused on doing fancy new things that they ignore the core broken parts - Hard to take PTO due to staffing issues - Departments do not communicate - The RIF was wildly mishandled
