Pros

The pros of working at SLAC during my time there (3 months) are as follows: -my supervisor was always available and easy to talk to when I needed help -coworkers would always lend a helping hand when I was stuck on a task and small talk never felt awkward -workplace is amazing and filled with incredible engineers and physicists -as an intern, we were given small tours of some of the facilities that SLAC offered to graduate students and scientists seeking research oppourtunities -good pay for first ever full-time job

Cons

-Drive was terrible (I live 15 miles away and drove to work at 6 in the morning. 1 hour commute there, hour and a HALF back.) -Work given was standard intern work and I had a desk job which was rather mundane

Thank you for taking the time to write a review. Glad to hear your internship was positive. SLAC mentors and colleagues enjoy collaborating with interns who bring fresh perspectives to our work. The lab hosts 100+ interns every summer in a wide variety of positions—scientific, technical, and business. Pros

Support critical scientific research. Location.

Cons

COO lacks leadership skills, has created a low-energy, murky environment. Lots of really bad behavior amongst people who think they are untouchable because of political clout.

Pros

Overall organizational expertise in science and engineering is high and it is a great place to do state-of-the-art engineering and science which is at the forefront of what is technically possible. Compensation and benefits for scientists are high relative to e.g. university for similar scientific jobs and quite competitive with industrial compensation. Work/life balance is great for most people except high achievers since they are generally not resourced proportionally.

Cons

Suffers from academic legacy governance and inefficiencies with an outdated level of leadership, an overemphasis on procedural approaches, and somewhat poor support for high achievers and fast tracking programs to allocate resource to the best talent. Even though the overall competence level is very good, high achievers will find themselves frustrated and eventually leaves.
