Pros

Good pay and benefits are average. Upgrade of equipment was very needed.

Cons

Hours are always a hassle and inconsistent. Work is put on the ones who produce without attempts to bring the slackers up to speed or show them the door.

I like the company pretty well, but Payroll is a terrible department to work for.

Pros

The salary is competitive and they have standard benefits like vacation, medical and dental insurance coverage. They do have stock sharing benefits and 401(k). Most of the people in the company are pretty easy to work and get along with, and the atmosphere is relaxed, with corporate casual dress policy.

Cons

The payroll department is run by a person who is very concerned with control. She does not want to have a traditional tiered department where she would have a supervisor, a few coordinators, and several specialists; instead, she wants all members of her department to be treated like specialists. There is very little sharing of pertinent information or sense of autonomy from this person. She operates on a need to know basis and discourages innovation. There are no periodic employee reviews and going to HR has been unsuccessful in the past, as observed by several employees who no longer work here because they spoke up. Because this manager has been a part of SAIA for more than 20 years, the situation seems unlikely to change. I can only assume that on some level her management style is a reflection of the corporate climate.
