Pay is low due to conservative spending by divisions and the university as a whole. Although this may have helped in preventing unwanted layoffs. Health benefits are not the best although they're not the worst. And in order to get health benefits payments down to a reasonably affordable rate, you have to enroll in Vitality, a program where they track your health through a website. You have to get a brief checkup either thru SLU, Walgreens clinic, or your doctor to get the discount. No paid maternity leave, unless you use your hours earned from vacation and sick time. And you're required to use all this time for maternity leave.

As someone who worked in first ITS and then another department. The university is terrible. The management is overall poor. They make promises and then pull it out from under you. I was promised I would earn more than I made as a contractor prior to becoming full time, but instead I earn much less. The management is constantly changing their minds about things so you always are playing catch up. They also love to micromanage everything. I was the SME for a very particular system on the campus and then they outsourced it to another contractor company. Their IT resources are mostly contracted through HCL and if you've ever worked with them before, they are a terrible company whose idea of good firewall rules is lock everything and fight tooth and nail to never unblock the needed traffic. The refuse to spend anything on their IT services and instead you deal with 15 year old hardware that you are expected to just simply make work for better or worse. Upper management does not listen to requests for a unified architecture and instead simply chooses to move everything to a new data center, as if that will fix the infrastructure problems that plague the university IT.
