Pros

Schellman & Company brings Big-4 caliber professionals together in a boutique firm environment. Everything you need and want in an employer can be found here. A thorough onboarding process ensures you start off on the right foot while ongoing training and professional development opportunities help keep your edge by providing the opportunity to develop new skills and certifications. Our clients are fantastic with a diversity of engaging project opportunities. You’re supplied with the latest technology that’s regularly refreshed along with great IT support to maximize uptime. The compensation is top of the market and the benefits are fantastic – no cost insurance for employees, 100% 401k match, quarterly bonuses, and 5 weeks of vacation (including a 2 week shutdown over the holidays). The annual trip for ALL employees is off the charts and is a great way to meet or reconnect with your colleagues from other cities, relax and have fun (plus you’re able to bring a guest)! In a firm that’s geographically dispersed, communication is critical. Regular all-employee calls ensures no one is on an island and everyone’s kept in the loop. The people are awesome and everyone contributes in a meaningful way to continually improve the firm. The Principals, Managers and Seniors in Service Delivery are top notch. The Graphics Designers, Business Development and Report Writing experts ensure we’re putting our best foot forward. IT, Training, Recruiting and Legal pave the way to ensure we have the tools and talent to do the job. HR and the rest of the Operations team are incredibly talented in helping support everyone in the field while the firm grows and thrives. All of this helps create the culture of the firm. The culture works and feels right. This is a no drama, get it done environment stacked with professionals. The tenure and minimal turnover validates how attractive and enriching the culture is.

Cons

Geographic diversity of both clients and employees often equates to regular travel. Those in larger metro areas with client concentration may not be impacted as much. For those who embrace travel, the opportunity exists to travel extensively, both domestically and internationally.

Pros

The new Schellman headquarters in Tampa are gorgeous and the casual, laid back dress code and attitude at the office is refreshing. You get great benefits like the company trip and paid health insurance. Most of the members of the executive team are smart and insightful and genuinely care about the future of the company and the welfare of employees. The auditors and principals are some of the most intelligent people you will ever work with and are knowledgeable about the industry. You can feel the passion for the industry and the health and well being of the company from many of the principals and managers.

Cons

Favoritism - There is a palpable favoritism at the company. Those that are "well-liked" and "yes people" are given praise and adulation above the hard-workers in the company. If you are a hard-worker but not liked by the executive team, you will be ignored, watched and/or punished for insignificant things like timekeeping and lunch breaks. There is also a significant difference in the way the field staff and operations staff are treated. Operations team members, exclusive of the C-suite executives, are treated as low-level worker bees because they do not directly bring in revenue for the company. HR Department - the Human Resources department is a joke. There is no focus on employee relations, culture, or engagement. Basically, the HR department is a payroll and 401K department. If you have questions, comments, or concerns, you have no one to address them with in confidence. Answers to questions about policies and procedures and expenses are inconsistent and usually brushed off because there is no policy to address it or the answer is unknow or they don't care enough to answer them. There isn't a level of trust with human resources - things that are said in confidential meetings are repeated and talked about to other employees. Culture & Engagement - no effort has been made to establish a welcoming, engaging culture. There is no focus on getting to know other team members as human beings. There are few team-building events and no company-wide community service program. There is an air of pretentiousness in the office and you will feel like everyone is looking out for themselves. There is a decidedly negative and cliquey "vibe" in the office and during my time at the company I heard several complaints about how awful it was to work at Schellman.

Pros

I have worked at Schellman & Company, LLC for over 14 years. It is very difficult to find a place of employment where you are extremely happy with everything including what the company stands for. I believe this begins with the leadership (Principals and Managers). They are some of the most incredible people I know both on a personal and professional level. I can’t think of a member that isn’t extremely honest, humble, genuine, supportive and passionate. The vision, direction and action plan of the leadership at Schellman can be defined by the incredible growth, retention rate of employees and employee sentiment. The culture that leadership has built empowers the employee. Every idea, concern or suggestion made by an employee is taken into consideration and addressed when possible. I can’t stress enough the depths Schellman goes to ensure that ideas, concerns or suggestions are considered or looked into as a standard practice. Outside of the professional support, the benefits provided to every employee are among the best in the market and any market for that matter. The quality and quantity of benefits and fringe benefits illustrate how important each employee is at Schellman. In addition, technology is important to allow the streamlining of processes and preventing the menial mundane tasks. There isn’t another accounting firm that is more technologically advanced and the improvements continue on a daily basis making it possible to accomplish more, in less time. With all sincerity this is an incredible place to work and I feel extremely grateful and blessed to have the opportunity to work here. I honestly cannot imagine working anywhere else. I truly think you are joining a family where each member of leadership and the company as a whole has extremely strong character, a focused moral compass and logic like I have never seen that allows for growth, success, and innovation.

Cons

Due to the extreme growth the work load can be a challenge at times. I will follow that up by saying that a number of key changes are currently being implemented to greatly improve efficiency and enable scalability for continued growth.
