Pros

Schellman & CO (formally Brightline) is literally the best place to work if you have a few years of IT audit / IT assessment experience. They will pay you better than anywhere else and you will be able to do much more and learn more than anywhere else at the senior level. The benefits are the best in class and you get to work remote when not travelling. The people at Schellman are all top performers, because you have to be to handle the level of work you get. You cannot sit around during a job, but have to be hitting it hard every minute you can. Otherwise you will really fall behind. There is no time reporting so you don't have to worry about that, they just put you somewhere for a week or two and you have to get the work done during those weeks. You get a ton of travel money (especially if you travel internationally) and 150 dollar tech credit each month. They do ISO 27001, HITRUST/HIPPA, PCI, SOC 1 & 2, NIST, and FedRAMP assessments. you could get exposure to all of these if you want, and you are able to work for really great clients (some of the best out there). They are always winning work so there is not a horrible push by upper management to sell work, even at the manager level. They sell work because they are the best of the best and clients know that. If you want to work hard and be compensated hard this is the place. If you are a top performer but your companies managed keeps screwing you every year on reviews and bonuses, this is the place. Because they will respect and compensate you. You are left to do your work with very little oversight (you just have to make sure you get it done).

Cons

You work a lot, but the compensation makes up for that. They are flexible when you need them to be, or if you have something going on. You travel a lot (not all practices travel the same but ISO travels a lot!). Sometime there might not be a great promotion path if the need isn't there (but the Big 4 are the same).

Pen Testing at Schellman

Pros

The biggest pros are the people and the projects. This is true for any service line at Schellman and not just pen testing. That said, the individuals on the pen test team and those that work closely with the pen test team are sharp. The company as a whole is very collaborative. Many of the projects are with cloud service providers, particularly with SaaS providers on the pen test side, which results in a lot of opportunities to seek out and exploit the latest and greatest vulnerabilities. The company is very supportive with training and development, including conference attendance.

Cons

On the pen test side there aren’t really any cons as long as you are ready to constantly face new challenges, willing to put in some extra time and accepting of being humbled on occasion. Projects can vary greatly from week to week and many projects include technologies, implementations or requirements that most people, including the pen test team, do not see very often. Sporadically, you will find out about some nuance on a Thursday or Friday, like next week’s application is developed in a framework like ZKoss or XPages, and need to be ready on Monday to test. There is generally enough time to prep, but sometimes it is a short turnaround.

Focus and Aggressive Growth

Pros

I have worked in many professional services organizations. Most will go out of their way to "invent" a new service to solve a client problem and generate revenue. Schellman focuses on on being the best at IT security, audit, and compliance and we only recruit people that are passionate about and experienced in these areas. This has allowed us to grow at a very fast pace by proving a focused set of services at a quality significantly greater than Big 4 can provide and other niche firms can mirror. Additionally, when assessments is the only line of business, there are no "loss leader" projects where Schellman undercuts its fees in hopes of generating additional product or services work. That approach never works out for employees or clients.

Cons

If you do not like to perform technology assessments, this is not the place for you. Clients expect personnel at all levels to be experts. While a CPA firm, Schellman is more like a law firm and managers and those aspiring to move up in that direction need to understand that rolling up your sleeves is a reality at all levels.
