Pros

Great training and a very supportive management team. Its a large company but still feels like everyone knows your name - even company leadership. Company encourages community involvement. One of the main company values is "Do the Right Thing" and every decision seems to run through that filter - both how they treat employees and agents and how customers are served.

Cons

Sales isn't for everyone so no one should expect it to be easy.

Pros

Shelter is a good company for someone new to the insurance industry. It offers a base salary and health benefits. The products are solid and it has a brokerage department when Shelter products are not an option.

Cons

Shelter focuses on small towns. It does not have competitive rates in bigger cities. Also, if you want to move away from the town you're in, you have to give up your book of business and transfer.
