Pros

Commitment to St. Jude's Hospital. Discount on jewelry. Location/access to corporate office. Successful field managers are recognized and well rewarded for sales success. Merchandising and store operations excel. Advertising is among the best. Financially successful company.

Cons

C-suite management is either oblivious to actual employee morale, or worse, party to the deception that 'we are really a people company that happens to sell jewelry.' The enterprise systems are hopelessly outdated and their system development model is positively draconian, with IT calling all the shots. Organization is so hopelessly vested in a 'silo structure' that managers (mid level and senior) spend more time and energy protecting their sphere of influence than developing cross functional solutions to resolving issues or improving processes. The management structure is totally hierarchical it is reminiscent of the company owned by Ebenezer Scrooge. Employees and managers have no access to the levels of management they need to get problems resolved quickly. Approvals at the VP level are required for the simplest request. There is no employee empowerment. HR is at best ineffective and at worst incompetent. The department overall is viewed with suspicion and contempt in the field and home office. The employee issue resolution process is distrusted and viewed as a rubber stamp favoring the company. The HR organization is less forthcoming than a secret society.

Pros

The company makes sure to provide you with all the tools you need to get the job done. Some of the people there are really cool and welcoming. Great place to start off as a jeweler because they have more resources, which come in handy when a job doesn’t go the right way. They give you a decent discount, making their pieces the same price as a mom and pop shop.

Cons

I fully recommend you reconsider sending your application to Signet. As a full time employee that has missed very little work, has had to open the shop all alone, has proven the work ethic, and had the role of a shop manager while still being an apprentice, I will tell you that Signet STILL won’t appreciate you and will kill your motivation. I ignored all the reviews on here because I was hoping to finally pursue my dream of being a jeweler. But surprise, surprise, they are all mainly true. They don’t give raises, they give “promotions”, if your metrics make it (if your motivation can beat your metrics). You need to learn about 10 different repairs and each individual repair requires a specific amount of successful attempts. Overall, I had to do 200+ jobs before I could test out my metrics. Once you do that, you have to get 10 jobs a day consistently for at least 2 weeks, in order to reach C jeweler status. Oh yeah, and just to mention these aren’t practice pieces, these are live jobs so the pressure is on. So now that I told you that you pretty much won’t get a promotion unless you threaten to quit or you work your butt off for $16.50, let’s get into the other things. So they say we have “paid holidays,” which means you don’t get that holiday off and if you end up being scheduled for that holiday you get paid regular pay. That’s right, regular pay, not 1.5x. Signet employs both of their jewelers and their sales representatives, but have unfair differences among the expectations. The sales representatives can relax when business is slow, but if we have nothing to do the best thing is to go home and eat into your PTO or else Signet will count those labor hours and tell you to make up jobs for them. Oh yeah, and we both start at the same wage, but jewelers don’t get paid commission, even when we make the sale happen. The only thing that we get extra is a bonus based on shop production, which I have yet to see and is only a small percentage of our quarterly wage (so I have heard, will update once if I see it). I was hoping that even though the pay is terrible that they would at least pay for my insurance like all my other jobs before. Well I finally got the heads up to sign up for benefits and find out I have to pay for my insurance. I still remember when my district manager told me I have to practice my work at home and get my own tools and I just thought to myself, how am I going to pay for rent, insurance, food, and tools that cost $25 per set of pliers on ~$1000 biweekly? Signet relies on artist that love the work and takes advantage of them. Unfortunately for them, I am not one of those artist (who will give them 5 years and only get paid 25/hr like my coworker) because I am soon leaving. Signet Jewelers killed my love for the job.

Pros

The only Pro is the Discounted Jewelry

Cons

WHERE DO I START? The most UNPROFESSIONAL work environment I’ve ever been in. 2 out of 3 managers I had were the most prideful, impatient, selfish people I’ve ever got to know. One manager made comments to a jeweler about how much he hates people of my race IN FRONT OF ME. He also made me do paperwork for many months and did not give me the proper training to advance. I still can’t believe how many days I’d be working trying to hold back my tears. The last manager a had was childish. Prior to the previous manager leaving, she lied and told my DM that I don’t respect her out of her own insecurities (when the whole time I was clearly supporting her desire to be a manager). She made many rookie mistakes, such as blaming me for things that were out of my control, demanding an unnecessary amount of work, demeaning me, screaming and lashing out under pressure, the list goes on. She and my first manager were often unable to remain professional. They could not maintain a basic level of respect for others when they made mistakes. I see it as a common occurrence in this company that the Shop Managers are dictators rather than leaders. They want everyone to slave so they can benefit with their annual 10k+ personal bonus. My last manager CHIPPED 2 center diamonds in the span of 2 months. She did not properly document them or inform the DM. She simply gave it to the head Jeweler to be spun around and hidden under the prongs. That is a fire-worthy offense according to company policy. Days I was off she would gossip and curse me out (the Jewelers would tell me). The environment has the potential to be successful; it all comes down to healthy leadership. So far in my experience and I haven’t seen it done, but I’m sure somewhere in the company there are selfless leaders. The pay is LOW. All the Jewelers told me that this company is the lowest paying. The hours are horrible. We have “blackout” months spanning from November-January. We cannot take off during those months. I know that’s what anyone should expect working in retail, but personally I would like to have a normal Holiday Season. I worked 3 months straight on Saturdays due to no seniority. I’ve seen people curse at each other, Jewelers gossip, make fun of peoples physical appearance, sexism, and racism. It’s a shame what the reality is in this company. I was never given a fair change to grow in this field. The DMs will only see you as competent and the managers tell them you are. I felt trapped. I didn’t feel safe enough to share with my DM about my last boss’ unfair treatment towards me. I believe the DMs need to be in each shop more often to actually get to know the employees work ethic (not the manipulated lies managers can tell). I was sad to leave Signet due to the layoffs but my time is up. 4 years was enough for me.
