solid product… poor culture

Pros

There are plenty of smart and driven people here. My team is full of genuinely nice and helpful people. Working here will build your skills and experience quickly, since the pace moves very fast and work environment is pretty trial-by-fire. The small company environment leaves a lot of room to make impact and learn a lot. Good pay and equity, unlimited PTO . If you have a supportive manager, requesting the time off you need isn’t an issue. Learning stipend is great. Fully remote is a plus.

Cons

Unfortunately there is no human element to working here. We aren’t allowed to have social slack channels for non-work discussion, we have zero social events, and there is no talk of diversity and inclusion, employee experience, etc. The only culture here is leadership pushing toxic “winning” culture. It is purely transactional. I did think the product would be successful but I don’t see this being a successful company if they continue to put zero effort into bettering the culture. After recent layoffs, the ceo was actually quoted as saying that the culture is focused on “performance” versus “some folks who want their personal needs to be served by a for-profit corporation”. Which is a pretty gross statement… but they defend it by saying that it’s “not for everyone”. Leadership didn’t take responsibility for the layoffs, acting as if growing too quickly wasn’t something they had control over. The recent forbes article speaks for itself. Administrative burdens make it difficult to get your day to day work done. Ridiculous over-the-top security will have you spending half your time authenticating, re-authenticating, restarting, resetting passwords an absurd amount. If you aren’t dealing with this then you’re probably spending time to come up with and constantly update your own personal OKRs... On top of this, we are expected to take quizzes at the end of company meetings to prove we were paying attention. We are also required to go through many intensive product trainings and tests that don’t relate to many of our roles. All of this just puts added strain on getting your actual job done.

Rules apply to everyone but leadership

Pros

Pay is decent and the product is important. Pay is reasonable. Decent healthcare options and the usual 401k. Few bonus perks like training budget in sunlight and WFH stipend. HOWEVER leadership is problematic. I am lucky enough to be under a caring empathetic director who protects his employees from the brunt of the toxic leaders above him but at best older leadership (I can not speak on new leadership hired this year) seems oblivious and out of touch at best and legitimately toxic at the top. HR’s stance is that employees should not expect to have a work life balance and that the company is “not for everyone” which is never a good sign. That may have worked in the before times but people expect to have a life now and you should want happy fulfilled employees in all aspects of their life. Live events a bit out of touch. Could have done without the ego stroking and lamborghini pictures of the C levels while the rest of us try to figure out how to feed ourselves after being served soggy paste sandwiches for lunch.

Cons

Ceo and leadership go directly against security’s recommendations. Much of leadership is the “exception” for security policies and safety leaving the org at risk. Compliance and security are often an afterthought for leadership while touted as a company value. Company actively deters personal connection and does not allow community channels or fun groups in various chat apps leading to poor sense of community. HR has flat out said that employees at Socure should NOT expect to have ANY work life balance and that it is not for everyone. They ignore the toxicity festering and have not kept up with the industry and flout security from the top down while sneering at employees for expecting to have a work and a life. If they do not adjust to the realities of modern employment I expect them to have trouble retaining top talent and encouraging younger employees to join the org.

Pros

OK salary, WFH stipend, decent healthcare

Cons

I’ve made a lot of decisions in my lifetime. Working for socure was single-handedly the worst decision I’ve ever made in my life. I left a great job for the money, for the challenge - a new opportunity. Every single day at Socure was horrendous, i honestly dreaded waking up every day in the morning knowing i had to show up. Getting laid off was the best thing to happen to me. I honestly believe it was someone or something greater looking out for me. I feel genuinely sorry for everyone who remains as i know how horrible it is to work here and wouldn’t wish it upon my worst enemy. It’s toxic from the top down, you will be lonely, isolated, unsupported, repeatedly sold a fake dream… The voluntary churn rate is unbelievable. I know countless people who quit 2 weeks in because it was such a sick work environment.
