Pros

The benefits package is pretty good and really enjoyed the C-suite trying to foster a positive culture.

Cons

Unfortunately, I only stuck around for about a year. Sure, the pay wasn't all that great, the workload is just plain ridiculous, outrageous rate of turnover but what ultimately drove me away from Sovos is my reporting manager. This person had no idea on how to lead a team and just destroyed the Agile process into a ultra micro-management session. I honestly felt this person was not qualified for this role and just used me as a scapegoat to shield themselves from certain tasks. For a large company, my reporting manager made me feel alone and isolated the majority of my time at Sovos. He/She would chant his/her open door policy but I always felt ridiculed during our 1-on-1's and in front of my colleagues during our team calls. Sometimes I would be given direction from the reporting manager and then that same person would turn around to claim they never instructed me to do so. I couldn't decipher if my reporting manager was just trying to make it unpleasant for me, deliberately gaslighting and/or just unfit for the role. This happened to me on several occasions which just lead me to look for another opportunity elsewhere.

Thank you for your well thought out feedback. I am glad that that you were able to see how important a positive culture is to us here. If you ever attended any of our All Hands meetings, or have heard our CEO Andy talk on the subject, you will know that having an inclusive environment where our teams can safely bring their whole selves to work is of the utmost importance to us and that that belief really does come from the very top down. Which is why reading about your experience with your direct manager is so challenging. We never want anyone to feel alone or isolated during their time here. We know how critical it is to have supportive and effective managers, both for the individuals that report into them and for the success of the company as a whole. Our managers should (of course) be good at their jobs but, more importantly, serve as mentors and coaches to the employees that interact with them. It is because of this that we have implemented programs like our manager bootcamps for newly hired and newly promoted leaders, to give them the tools that they need to be successful leaders. I am sorry that you did not know the options for providing feedback and where to go to be heard. We always want employees to have a place where they can share feedback in a comfortable way. We encourage employees to talk to HR or their Senior Leader in cases similar to yours, and for those who may not feel comfortable doing that, we do have ways of reporting anonymously as well. Nobody at Sovos should ever fear retaliation for speaking out about something that they feel is unfair. I am sorry that you had the experience that you did. If you still want to reach out, I would be more than happy to connect. I wish you the best of luck as you move forward in your career.

Dishonest leadership + poor compensation + a bad product

Pros

I met some great friends here in my 2.5 years. Almost everyone I worked with was a genuinely good person. It’s also very easy to move up the corporate ladder in a short span of time if you prove yourself to be smart and enthusiastic.

Cons

The pay is very low. I was promoted (for the second time) after a year and a half, and was making $20,000 under the median salary for my new title in my area. I was told I was only eligible for a performance-based raise; not for a new salary reflecting my added responsibilities. And they even nickel-and-dimed me on the performance-based raise, despite consistently positive reviews from my supervisors. The corporate culture is nonexistent; they hire entry-level talent for cheap and people leave constantly because of it. The “Boston” office is actually 20 miles north of the city right off 93 in a depressing corporate office park. Ditto “Minneapolis” and “Atlanta.” By far the most comical was their attempt to spin Farnborough in the UK as “London” – it’s nearly two hours away! The “Executive Leadership Team” is completely full of it, and they barely attempt to hide it. Everyone knows the product and the company are not viable long-term; the software is 30 years out of date and all recorded revenue growth is a result of ill-fated acquisitions to “expand our global footprint” (read: acquire companies that are actually good at what they do in the hope that it’ll rub off on Sovos).

It is no accident you worked with great people during your time at Sovos, or that you saw a career path here for smart, engaged professionals. Our strategy is to hire for culture and talent – even over experience – because we know talented people will rise to the challenges of a dynamic, growing company in a dynamic, growing market. Nearly half of our 1,300+ employees are early in their careers. They come to Sovos because they can get experiences they wouldn’t get anywhere else. Is this a company where you will work in the heart of a city? In some of our 14 global locations, yes, and in others, no. Is this a company where career-minded people have the chance to learn and advance while helping our customers manage the digital transformation of tax? In every Sovos office, the answer is “yes.” This approach works for the company and most of the people that work here. IDC named Sovos a leader in its 2019 MarketScape report on our market, and Gartner recently positioned us as one of only three compliance vendors of note (including one we’ve since acquired) in a competitive landscape. I hope everyone who works here takes pride in how these independent industry analysts have evaluated Sovos product vision and individual solutions. The people who thrive at Sovos, as it sounds you did with two promotions in less than three years, do so because they embody our core values to be collaborative, accountable, adaptable, proactive and professional. That is the Sovos culture. Thanks for your contributions to Sovos during your time here. We wish you the best in your future career.

Pros

Growing company (organic and through takeovers), so that created a lot of opportunities for advancement

Cons

Employee churn was always high. People would disappear and no one would discuss it. High school type of atmosphere, odd for an office environment

Thanks for the feedback. We’re glad that you were able to see the opportunity for advancement here at Sovos. The company has experienced tremendous growth over the past few years and that has allowed us to offer opportunities to our employees that enable them to develop their careers in new and exciting ways. Often that means that they grow within Sovos, but sometimes it means that they use the skills they develop here and bring their talents elsewhere. We hate to see our great employees leave us, but we are proud that we gave them a skillset that is transferable and that they are able to grow professionally. Despite the perception you may have had – employee turnover is actually the lowest that it has ever been here! We are the first to admit that communication can be difficult and we aren’t always perfect at it, which is why improving effective communication was one of our strategic goals for FY18. We saw significant improvement in employee satisfaction related to that and we will continue to work on it. And finally, we want to address your comment about our atmosphere. We strive to be a community of professional and collaborative individuals rowing together – and that, overwhelmingly, is the feedback that we get from employees both past and present. Over and over we hear how awesome the people are that work here and how much people value our culture. We are sorry that you saw the differently. We want to thank you for the time that you spent with Sovos and we wish you luck in the future.
