Pros

- Great team of individual contributors - Fun work environment - Free snacks and beer---scaled back from before due to budget cuts

Cons

- Lack of communication and transparency - Lack of leadership from upper management - Lack of company vision and long term strategic direction - Upper management ignores expertise yet exhibits little of their own - Executive motto: My way or the highway - Rushing to deals with partners / to get product on shelves and skipping important steps in the process - Upper management prefers to set aggressive schedules and overwork employees year after year---praising them for working extra hours and over holidays---than to set reasonable timelines and expectations - Culture of fear and intimidation, highly political - Lack of mentorship for most roles---ex. engineers either report up to the CFO or to a product manager - Some managers have up to 14 direct reports. As a result, it seems HR folks are doing the people management side of things. - Lack of confidentiality with HR - Lack of commensurate response from HR---senior executives are protected despite egregious behavior

Pros

- Incredible culture and some of the most incredible people I've ever worked with! - Benefits are second to none (but in danger of becoming less so) - Very interesting and fun problem space - Passion for the products being made, and a true talent for bringing real robotic connected play experiences into people's homes.

Cons

- After a recent organizational restructure, there are absolutely no career paths available to employees outside of ousting their own boss. - Senior Management and C-Level staff are beginning to chase the dollar and care less about quality delivery and product - Too much attention paid to the bottom line, and too little attention paid to the overall engineering quality behind the products. - No real understanding of how to plan ahead for product development, and absolutely no attention paid to software development process and timeline. - Long hours spent by teams that are behind schedule are given more appreciation, than the teams that are organized, think ahead, and innovate to make the timeline more achievable - Deliverables and products are judged on their revenue potential rather than their quality or longevity to end-users - User retention is never a priority... as long as the money is spent on the "shiny new product", the executives are happy. - Executive management is focused on acquisition, but seemingly has no interest in developing IP or technology in which potential buyers would be interested

Pros

People are fun to work with, the founders are the most easy going people in the world. Cool technology and innovation. Everyone willing to help. It is a great place for electrical/hardware/firmware eng' to work the team leads are great!

Cons

2016 brought upon Sphero new management, no longer open door concept with CEO/COO. The new CFO is running the show like it was his own backyard and no one seams to care or too scared to say anything. From a great company without so much office politics, Sphero become a place when people afraid to speak up and raise their concerns. Life work balance is slowly vanishing, if you are software developer expect long nights and weekends. It became very departmental culture, each department is isolated together and even though it is such a small company people don't know their coworker's name.

Thank you for you feedback. The company has changed dramatically over the last few years - especially in the last 12 months. It saddens me that you feel you could not speak your mind and you felt that the open door nature of the past has turned into an office with a lot of politics. That is not the culture I want to manifest and we are working to overcome that every day. Part of trying to solve these issues is by bringing in new management - like our CFO - and create processes so people know what they are working on and the deadlines we must meet. We also are working to train people on our business so they understand the nature/pressures of our operations as we grow. The way things worked when we were 20 people do not scale now that we are 200. I hope you made some good friends while you were at Sphero and are proud of your work. Your contribution has helped us become a successful company. It has been and will most likely always be a high pressure environment due to the nature of our seasonal business, our partners and my desire to chase the fun so we are never satisfied and continue to make the best connected play products for the market. Your comments are immensely helpful. Thank you for you contribution over the years - best of luck with your new endeavor and trust that we will be continually working to improve things at Sphero. - Paul
