Used to be a great place to work - not sure anymore

Pros

People, people, people. Great folks who mostly love what they do. Great transparency from the upper levels. Upper management is always available to listen. Company puts high emphasis on culture and keeping employees happy.

Cons

Company is changing directions to follow the money and as a result, its culture is going to change with it. It's not a tech / software company anymore - it's an advertising company.

Thanks for the feedback. I'm glad you've highlighted the importance of culture both internally and externally. We've put great focus there over the years. It looks like you were at Spiceworks for less than a year which would mean your only experience was during 2016. That was certainly a tough transition year for us and we're excited to have moved on to 2017 and to have our momentum back! All companies must evolve and "change directions" or they will no longer be relevant at some point. Learning to "change directions" is also important to build as a core skill of a company that will be around for the long-term. As we've evolved to be relevant in an increasingly complex and cloud-based IT world we've not wavered from our "North Star": helping the IT pro do their job every day. How we help them is changing but who we're helping hasn't. Sometimes folks get a bit stuck in their belief that that 'how' must remain the same forever. Regarding following money, yes, it is important to ANY business. We've likewise had to evolve our ad technology, our sales team, and sales approach to respond to evolutions in the advertising industry. I'm proud of how the team has evolved and help us build a foundation for growth in the future.

Pros

Take reviews prior to 2015 with a grain of salt. It's a much different place. Free snacks, drinks and coffee may have been awesome perks a decade ago, but are now a dime a dozen in Austin. Incredibly nice people to work with.

Cons

Zero communication across teams. Simple projects take several months due to lack of communication. Lack of training for new hires. Growing attrition rate at an alarming pace. People are promoted due only to length of employment, not merit. Managers haven't received formal training, but upper management has made an effort to change this. Better late than never. Morale is incredibly low since the layoffs, and it doesn't seem to be getting better. Work flexibility is pretty much non-existent if you work outside Dev. Can't work from home or come in late. The "mandatory" Friday meetings aren't necessary. We've all been asking for them to be moved - you'd have higher turnout.

I'm sorry to see your views on Spiceworks have turned so negative. I'm also disappointed that I don't think we've had a chance to discuss these in person. As always, I'd welcome the chance for you to stop by or send me an email so we can get to the root of the issues here, resolve them, and get to a better outcome. I'd like to address a number of your points and what we're doing about them. We've discussed most of these at our company meetings but it always bears repeating as may not have gotten it right yet. 1) Communication across teams takes a lot of work. We've put in place OKRs, and RevOps and Product Ops are venues to surface cross-team communication. Beyond that we expect our managers to be able to talk to each other and sort this out -- if this isn't happening the only to fix it is to know about it. I don't have ESP. 2) Training for new hires varies by department, role and level within those departments so it's not fair to see "lack of training". That said, we can ALWAYS do more and do better training so it'd help to know which team you are on. 3) We've certainly had a lot of turnover and change this year. People have left for a variety of reasons. We're also hiring amazing folks who have skills and experiences aligned with where we are going and the huge opportunity in front of us. 4) Have you discussed work flexibility with your manager? We've been accommodating within reason for every situation I'm aware of. 5) The company meetings (which are usually on Friday) are in our view a necessary part of communicating across a company of our size. In 2017 we'll revisit the timing. If you have suggestions on improving the content please let me know. Regarding your last point on "begging for a change" it'd be great to know what you really mean there. We've gone through a lot of change this year as we realign to make sure we're delivering on our purpose to "connect everyone IT" for the next 10 years and beyond. The results are starting to show as we've shared our financial and operating progress in Q4. I'm seeing a lot of excitement with the IT pros we serve, the tech companies that advertise with us and many of our Spiceworkers and I'm personally very excited for 2017. I'd welcome the chance for us to talk 1:1 to see how we can help you out and get you back to the optimism you had before 2016.

Pros

OTE and compensation is strong. Good name recognition in the market place and plenty of products and solutions to sell to tech marketers. Culture is still fairly good although working remote doesn't give me full insight into this. Management allows you the freedom to be yourself and do your job without micro-managing. Overall, working at Spiceworks has been a positive experience.

Cons

After several rounds of funding, seem to still be trying to "figure" it out. New senior sales leadership, recent round of layoffs and a significant adjustment to annual revenue projections says shaky future. With that said, there seem to be solid ideas and product dev for 2017. Not sure on account opportunities for new sales hires, saturated with greener sales reps.

I'm glad to hear it has been a positive experience! In regards to "figuring it out" let's remember few companies get to the scale we've achieved and getting to the next level usually takes some time. We're excited to be working through that challenge with a great team. The "recent round" occurred in June '16 and we communicated the reasons publicly on our blog and through several internal meetings. I appreciate your feedback on too many products. They're a result of our sales, product and marketing team's creativity and responsiveness to our client's needs over the years. That said, we are narrowing our set of products. Without getting into details here, we retired quite a few in Q4 and have more scheduled for '17. In addition, we've also winnowed down which products are available to which type of accounts. These changes were communicated at the end of November but it's possible we didn't get that news to everyone. Please be sure to continue this conversation with your sales leadership (or directly with product marketing).
