Poor materials, poor job of providing students, terrible salary

Pros

Involved, professional managers; paid "training", and they send you materials for free; also, it's nice that it's a W-2 situation and not a 1099 for tax purposes.

Cons

1. I was hired with the promise of quick raises after a certain number of hours. They consistently advertised on Craigslist for tutors in my market, but they didn't offer me a single student for about four months, and I tutor a wide variety of commonly requested subjects. 2. They don't give you the option of refusing a student; if they assign you the student, you're stuck with them. 3. You're expected to use materials that aren't very good - the critical reading passages are downright terrible. 4. The salary as a fraction of what the student pays is appalling; I made about 15% of what the students were paying. I stopped accepting students once I learned that. They also expect a lot of preparation and outside work, but they don't pay nearly enough to justify it.

I appreciate for your candid feedback. Thanks for recognizing that we consider our tutors W-2 employees instead of 1099 contractors, as that is a huge expense for us. We invest in our staff in this way to avoid the exact experience you mention, which is uncontrolled program quality. Companies that consider tutors contracts can't give them materials or train them. We believe that better student comes happen when you have a great tutor combined with great curricula. We do try to pay competitive tutor wages even with these added costs to us. Few hours, uncompetitive pay

Pros

-Flexible schedule -Work independently with students

Cons

-StudyPoint requires that tutors travel up to 30 minutes to meet students in their homes. Tutors start at low pay and do not receive compensation for mileage or travel time. -Tutor training is weak -- you bring your own skills to the job, and anything yo -Not compensated for prep time or for the time you take to communicate with family and supervisors. You will ONLY be paid for hours tutored.

Pros

There was much flexibility with scheduling and there was always payment security

Cons

Considering they are charging students over one hundred dollars per hour, its practically extortion when they pay their tutors twenty per hour. Promotions and other opportunities were also promised but never offered.
