Toxic Work Environment, CEO That Micro-Manages

Pros

Some of the employees are talented and are nice people.

Cons

The CEO of the company is a micro-manager who also creates a toxic work environment. He is very disrespectful to employees and he expects employees to always be available no matter the time of day. Further meetings are very long and have no focus. The company has no direction and employee morale is very poor.

Thank you for leaving a review on your experience at Synergy. As you are a current employee, we would highly encourage that you discuss your concerns with Human Resources and/or submit instances of toxicity through our anonymous feedback portal supplied to all Synergy employees. We do not in any way wish to promote toxic behavior and want to hear from our employees if they are uncomfortable. Our CEO and the leadership team are hands-on and customer focused. They often work directly with the delivery team in the trenches. We support several critical government agencies and serve important missions for the country, and we take a lot of pride in delivering top notch support to those customers. Sometimes this line of business calls for us to work long hours and weekends, but this is more of an exception than the norm. Our management has no intention to micromanage, as we understand that it is counterproductive. Synergy rewards employees with above-market compensation and manages them by providing context and setting goals and objectives. However, in some cases, a greater degree of management may be necessary so that an employee can successfully achieve their goals and objectives. Employees who require that level of assistance may feel micromanaged, but this type of management is not the norm for the vast majority of our staff who consistently meet or exceed their performance goals and objectives. Likewise, feedback from the majority of the company indicates positive morale and excitement about the projects we’re supporting as well as enjoyment in working with their teammates. That doesn’t mean your experience isn’t real or that it shouldn’t be addressed, but just that it doesn’t appear to be the norm. Again, we highly encourage the use of our anonymous feedback portal or a conversation with HR to ensure that you and your teammates are heard. We are aware of many positive-thinking, motivated, and encouraging employees and teams within Synergy. Employee morale doesn’t only come from the leadership, but also from within the team. Remember that you hold the power to be the positive influence that may encourage positive conversations and spark morale.

Pros

Good benefits and competitive salary

Cons

Like other one star reviews, the problem starts with the management. They have grown from 50 to 350 but they operate like a 5 people company. They bring you in for your expertise, promise a different role during the interview but you end up with a much less desired position that is constantly micromanaged. The top management gets involved in everything and wants to make every decision regardless of what feedback the team or employees give them. There is no career here and its a constant revolving door. I am surprised how they still manage to survive. If you are planning to join, save your energy and go work somewhere else.

Pros

The salary was within the range I was seeking.

Cons

I was hired as a Full Stack Cloud Engineer. I interviewed for a position that was 90% remote and promised a lot of software engineering work. However once I started, it was made clear to me that I am expected to be in the office every day because the "client" needs to "see me". The only work I was tasked with was re-organizing a shared drive. Additionally, despite one of the clients in the office testing positive for COVID-19, I was still expected to come to the office everyday. My employment there was a joke, and the worst experience of my professional career.

The global COVID-19 pandemic is unprecedented, and many companies and government agencies have a wide range of differing responses based on the needs of the organization. As government contractors, our customers are going to have requirements that supersede Synergy’s own polices. Our headquarters office has been closed since March, but some of the government customers we support require on-site presence to carry out the mission-critical tasks that ensure safety for our country. In cases where an employee is at high-risk if they were to contract COVID-19, we have made accommodations to keep them working in other capacities as safely as possible. Candidates seeking employment on our contracted positions should discuss any COVID-related concerns with our recruiters. Regarding the management concerns, Synergy has a high level of confidence in our management team and invests significant time and resources to ensure they are successful and equipped to lead their teams. As with any employee, not every manager is going to be a perfect fit. But when that is obvious, we take steps to either equip, re-assign, or address any concerns. However, our consistent experience with complaints about our project managers has been that perspectives vary widely from those employees who are skilled, team-players, positive, and self-motivated as compared to those who may not be a good fit for the high-performance environment demanded by the contracts we support. Synergy will continue to strive for excellence at every level so that we can deliver the best possible results to our customers.
