Profit Driven - Low Staff Morale

Pros

Friendly company culture. 4 weeks of vacation (but you work extra for it). Employees are encouraged to use their education benefits to get certifications. They encourage social events monthly. They encourage employee referrals to build good staff. They try to retain most employees if a contract is lost.

Cons

Compensation is under market value in most cases. Benefits are mediocre and pay increases are rare. Annual reviews were not conducted due to their connotation with pay increases/raises. They recently implemented annual reviews after employees complained for years. They do not try to retain valuable employees with counter offers. Only people on the "inner circle" are recognized and promoted. People who go above and beyond on contracts are not recognized or promoted. The only way you will move up in the company is if you have a personal relationship with senior staff, or you make the company money. Bottom line, you will probably stay in the position you are hired for and compensation will not change much (if any). They have an annual "year-end weekend" in December that consists of a mandatory meeting on a Friday 5-10 pm, and a Holiday party the following day. Yes the meeting is mandatory after working all week/day, during the holiday season, during rush hour, and only light appetizers are served. Every on-site employee dreads it. Nothing like being forced to sit in a room for 5 hours, tired, hungry, thinking about holiday shopping you need to do, missing time with family/friends, and/or postponing travel plans. Only to watch the same people get awards year after year when they don't deserve it, and you know others (like your boss) who deserve it but are never recognized.

Pros

Very personable organization who recognizes employee lifestyle. Very professional outlook on customer support. Small company with big goals for their employees.

Cons

Need to explore training of employees in latest work tools. Get more involved in day-to-day operations. Take time to council employees on work ethics.

Pros

Decent base pay for the area. A strong team of excellent professionals to work with. This is the perfect end of career job to ride out until retirement. Being a small company internally their are not huge bureaucracies or overly complex requirements for employment (except as required by the government). Pretty good 401k plan.

Cons

Their is a divide between corporate staff and the contract support staff. Great opportunities for corporate personnel, but contract support personnel have virtually no chance of promotion to higher positions and have no method to validate their contributions to justify raises. Management thinks that having a nice personality and avoiding confrontation is what leadership is about. Leadership categorizes people's skills and discourages venturing outside that box, rather than trying to build a more diverse work force. Managers have no idea how to handle work force problems, nor how to deal with personnel leaving under bad circumstances.
