Pros

Great culture and work/life balance. Takes the clients, people, and interesting work from the big consulting companies and removes the bureaucracy, sales targets, travel, and stressful work culture.

Cons

Berkeley has a small US/NYC footprint and is still growing here, as such, it doesn't yet feel like a fully functional US office...but, they're working on it and it's growing. Overall diversity of the workforce (gender and race) needs to improve and they are working on it.

Pros

A Partner and Consultant group full of thoughtful, intelligent, and inclusive people sets the tone for the overall culture which permeates throughout all aspects of company. Berkeley has a mantra of doing the right thing. This is applicable to the clients as well as its people. What that looks like, given my short experience at the firm: - Partners being fully transparent about the impact of Covid on our business and the possible actions we might have to pursue in potential scenarios; - Having honest conversations with the client about what we think they actually need vs. what was initially on the SOW; and - Setting aside time to engage in thoughtful and open conversation about racial justice, what we can do as individuals and as a firm, and how we can act authentically vs. virtue signaling While I have yet to fully experience the social aspect of the firm thanks to the pandemic, it's clear that people really enjoy the company of their colleague and respect each others' boundaries

Cons

The most apparent improvement opportunity is diversity at the leadership level. As promotions are made internally, there is an obvious lead time before changes can occur. It's understandable, but no less frustrating. However, it's good to know the firm has continuously made improvements in diversifying its Consultant group (aka partnership pipeline) and is working on strengthening our efforts following the diversity conversations. Additionally, even with a short stint at Berkeley, it's clear leadership encourages, respects, and really listens to different perspectives

Pros

Berkeley is a great place to work. You have autonomy and trust to do your job. The leadership team remove the obstacles and distractions of internal politics, sales targets and thing you 'should' do to allow you to focus solely on your clients and the job at hand. Client work is challenging, complex and interesting on both of the projects I've been on. It has demanded a level of intellect and thinking that I haven't experienced in over 13 years of consulting, which I've really enjoyed. I feel truly valued for being a generalist (no longer a negative connotation attached) with a broad range of skills and industry knowledge and being able to apply this knowledge and experience in a client context. In the last 6 months, I've already worked on two very different pieces of work needing totally different approaches - both in a Covid world fully remote!

Cons

Small teams (sometimes 1) on client projects mean that you don't often get a 'team' feel and it can be difficult to feel like you're part of a bigger firm. However, Berkeley more than make up for it with the effort they make to try and keep us connected with one another - virtual or in-person. If you want to go deep into a specialty and only do one type of work in one industry, this may not be the best fit.
