Pros

- Amazing coworkers. I loved every team I was in - very collaborative spirit. Then again, we were all moved into Unity from Finger Foods so that culture was bred prior to Unity. - Supportive managers that valued personal growth for each team member. - As a major player in the game development space, powering countless indie and AAA games, VR/AR experiences, the projects I got to work on were exciting and interesting. - Unity embraced remote and hybrid work models, making it easier to maintain work-life balance.

Cons

-Multiple rounds of layoffs (in 2023 and 2024) created job insecurity and affected team morale. I saw so many waves of incredible coworkers get let go due to poor management decisions.

Pros

In some offices the culture and community is still decent and friendly. If you are desperate for ANY job, then this is enough.

Cons

In Ads in particular, all management and "decision making" now takes place in SF (copy/paste from Applovin), meaning that there are virtually no managers elsewhere, and everyone else is considered "unskilled labor" (literally the words of top managers). A LOT of public and internal overpromises about deliverables in projects that are not actually performing or even exist. Zero-sum mentality. Most chat channels are private and inaccessible to anyone not personally invited by certain managers. Think compartmentalization and "need to know" policies. Average overall compensation, considering stock as a part. It may be actually OK in smaller countries (compared to the local market) and considering stock refreshers, but you are still heavily dependent on stock performance. Expect 0-5% increase at best without promo. You can EASILY get 0% even if you are the smartest guy in the room. Delusional, out of touch senior management with no competence. It is a SF company, so everyone is a VP or Principal without any decent experience or unique knowledge. Super strange and unstable org chart. They "flatten" or restructure it every few months, managers change back and forth, people moved from project to project and backwards. No product vision for the last few years. Instead, they even killed all promising remaining initiatives (to "refocus"). Year after year, they continue to promise more data and ML will solve all the problems. Layoffs every few months to compensate for their own failures and lack of vision. Recently, they even decided to tear apart the entire office just because one executive received a fierce feedback of his plans. Since then, every time they open their mouth, you always hear: "You didn't believe in me, and now you shall see my success." Disgusting and inhumane. Friends promote friends and loyal people. Forget about working smarter and getting promoted for accomplishments. For reference, there are Staff engineers who struggle with git and have never had a github account. Super overpaid CEO for deliveries. 50M???

Pros

Great people to work with, company used to have a great reputation for doing right by its users, salary and benefits were decent

Cons

No overall strategy, cutthroat approach to making revenue at all costs (including layoffs constantly), happy to make things difficult for customers in favor of profit.

Pros

Large Community – A vast, active community provides ample tutorials, support, and shared resources, which can be invaluable for troubleshooting and learning.

Cons

Unstable Work Environment – Recent rounds of mass layoffs have created an atmosphere of instability, raising concerns about the company’s internal management. Financial Instability and Potential Bankruptcy – The company has been facing significant financial challenges, fueling fears that it may be heading toward bankruptcy. Poor Valuation of Employees and Customers – Critics argue that Unity does not adequately value its employees or its customers, leading to widespread dissatisfaction among both groups. Frequent Policy Changes – Rapid and sometimes unclear changes in business models and policies have left developers and investors uncertain about the platform’s future direction. Performance and Optimization Issues – Despite its multi-platform capabilities, some developers have reported performance and optimization challenges, particularly on mobile platforms. Mismanagement of Key Personnel – The company has been criticized for laying off essential, productive employees while retaining toxic individuals who are seen as damaging the overall health of the organization.

Pros

Innovative and Impactful Work: Opportunity to work on cutting-edge tools and technologies that power some of the world’s most popular games and real-time 3D applications. Collaborative Culture: Supportive, diverse, and inclusive environment where cross-functional teamwork is highly encouraged. Strong Work-Life Balance: Flexible hours and remote-friendly options that make it easier to manage personal and professional life. Global Exposure: Chance to work with teams and clients across the world, which broadens perspective and builds international communication skills. Learning & Development: Access to internal learning platforms, technical deep dives, and mentorship from very experienced colleagues. Leadership Accessibility: Leadership is open to feedback and encourages bottom-up ideas for product and process improvement. Respect for Quality: High regard for QA and client feedback, which allows you to make a real impact on product quality and user experience. Fun and Passionate People: The company culture is driven by people who are genuinely passionate about technology, gaming, and problem-solving.

Cons

Frequent Leadership Changes: During my time at Unity, there were multiple shifts in senior leadership, which at times created a lack of clear long-term vision and stability for certain teams. Strategic Uncertainty: Some decisions made at the leadership level felt disconnected from team-level realities, leading to confusion around priorities and team morale. Layoffs and Organizational Restructuring: The layoff cycle I experienced was abrupt and impacted many talented individuals. It also contributed to a sense of uncertainty across departments. Shift Away from Core Values: As the company scaled, there were moments where the culture felt less aligned with Unity’s earlier emphasis on openness and collaboration.

Pros

- Great people at the office (Helsinki)

Cons

- Mass layoffs after mass layoffs - VPs and high management level are a PITA. - Politics & questionable decisions from higherups really ruined the product, especially in adtech.
