A confusing company with no long term vision

Pros

There are some truly talented people here. The company puts a lot of emphasis on employee wellbeing and diversity. Some of their solutions are innovative and industry-changing They have not implemented any return to office mandate depending on department.

Cons

Pay is not on par with industry standards. If you don’t have a leader willing to fight for you, you’re likely being paid less than many of your peers. HR is overly involved in everything, to the extent that you can’t hold anyone accountable for poor performance. As a result, leaders are hamstrung, spending their time documenting poor behavior to no end, with not actual repercussions. Employees are quick to run to HR at the slightest inconvenience, so if you are a leader, make sure there’s a lot of sunshine and rainbows. Holding people accountable to performance metrics doesn’t exist here. There is no long term vision for the company overall. Nothing changes if nothing changes and while they did well to pivot during Covid, it still seems as though there is no clear vision for what’s next. Inflexible. I saw so many talented and passionate people leave during my time here because of a refusal to bend. I should note that these are not company-wide experiences. Some departments are much better than others.

Our company comprises a diverse range of people, cultures and experiences across 20 office locations and 12 countries around the world, and each day we work together to create a company culture and employee experience that’s welcoming to – and inclusive of – all people. This is a commitment we continue to expand through our work with our (external) diversity, equity, inclusion and belonging partner and our (internal) Inclusion Council – comprising team members from around the world – and across our senior leadership team and broader employee population through additional internal training and education, and process improvements across our recruiting and day-to-day business operations. That said, we take this comment very seriously and would like to discuss it further if you’re willing to do so. Please email Danielle Boots, HR director at dmboots@urbanscience.com at your earliest convenience and contact you without delay.

Great 1st Job

Pros

Coworkers were all very friendly and fun to work with - made some good friends outside of work. Was able to learn SQL pretty much on the job (they have a path to certification). Pay was pretty good for someone fresh out of undergrad. Lots of opportunities to move up (although you'll get a LOT more work). My team's managers cared about people's wellbeing. 19 days of PTO and you can WFH permanently.

Cons

A mountain of work needs to be done monthly and it was mostly boring work, so I was stuck doing the same thing over and over until I asked for different work, but that meant someone else on the team had to do it (usually the new hires). They are slow to implement new technologies. Our team's data visualizations were all in Excel or PDFs. The only technical transferable skills I learned were SQL and Excel. Their propriety software is very unintuitive and outdated (looks and feels like it's from the 90s). Felt like I was a bit micromanaged by my managers. Turnover seems to be high - I saw a lot of smart and talented coworkers jump ship in the very short time I worked there. The pay bump with promotions is not worth the added responsibilities.
